They were most likely tucking the ends of the belt into the belt. This prevents the belt from coming undone easily. Tying at the front as is shown here is fine for styles like Karate and Taekwondo where there is minimal wrestling done, but in Judo and Jujitsu, you'll likely run into many times where your belt comes undone.

It’s a square knot, so it shouldn’t come untied too easily as long is you break your belt in and get it used to this knot.

If you don't care if the belt comes off, this is the way. Why don't people care if their belt comes off? I notice a lot of people (higher belts included). I'm new to jiujitsu but not new to martial arts. Cheers.

@@olivarrio belts come off. Not a big deal, just retie them. This isn’t my favorite way to tie it but I do find that it is the simplest for beginners.

@@pjbroome3 Jiu-Jitsu foi desenvolvido e melhorado no Brasil, como ainda é feito. O Jiu-Jitsu Japonês praticamente não existe mais, ficou obsoleto. Jiu-Jitsu Brasileiro foi aprimorado aqui pela Família Gracie, onde foram criando suas proprias técnicas e espalhando mundo a fora. American Jiu-Jitsu ainda não existe, a menos que vc tenha criado novas técnicas, posições, métodos, ensinamentos, etc.

If you pay attention, when I put the bottom tail in front of me I turn it over which eliminates the “twisty” in my knot. If you don’t also do this then yours will have it

I personally don’t tie my belt this way but I find that it is the easiest for beginners to learn. 5 year olds don’t need pretty knots on their belts they just need them to be tied lol
