The very best way is to knot is a double square knot and make it permanent. When you don't need it anymore you hack it off, throw the scrap rope on the ground. If you need it again, you double square knot it again. Works for all knots without fail. In 70 years I have never had a double square knot fail.

How does this compare to an Alpine Butterfly?

I see it as the same thing just climbing vs fish but just sound complicated.

They both serve the same function, and my opinion is that it just comes down to preference. But I have tested and pulled tension from all directions and there is no sign of anything wrong. The Alpine Butterfly may have a slight advantage of not tightening as much when tension is put on the loop, or an easier untie you could call it. I may create a video comparing the two knots under tension to examine the differences!

I was going to ask the same question. It also reminds me of the Prusik (IIRC) hitch, except that is a) a hitch and b) a separate piece of line. But remembering that lets me remember this one w/o much effort. I’d be interested to see the results if u did a comparison, cuz the alpine is a PITA to untie after loading. Admittedly, it probably won’t be a popular video with the masses
