Nice Mike. I just fold the tippet over, pinch it where I want the top fly, tie a double surgeons, then snip about 4 inches from the knot to form the tag. Perfect every time.

I like this idea! Gonna try it next time out… I do something similar - tippet already attached to ring. Use 20” extra. Double that extra back on itself and tie a triple surgeons with the doubled line. Now you’ve got a ~20” loop on the end of your tippet. Cut one leg of the loop a few inches under the knot - that’s your top fly. The remaining long leg of the loop you just cut is your bottom fly. Might be something to try for those that struggle to tie a blood knot on the stream…you don’t get that nice 90° angle of the dropper coming off the line like you do with a blood knot but it still works.

Another way to do this is just go to where you want your top fly, tie a double surgeon 3” loop, pull it tight , cut one side of the loop at the knot and you have a perfect 6” dropper which you can trim to 5” or 4” you can do 2 of these and use the bottom one for a drop shot rig.

Something else to try would be to have a lighter tippet to the bottom fly and place the heavier fly on the top. This gets both flies running near the bottom. This is especially effective in cold water or times when the bottom fly is receiving the most attention.

Great idea Iron Mike. I’ve been thinking about transitioning to the dropper line setup. One reason why I haven’t just yet, is because I change out flies very often when I’m on the water. I feel like if I want to change out the top fly, then I will have to use a whole lot of tippet to redo the entire dropper rig each time. Does that make sense? Do you run through way more tippet when it comes to changing flies on the water with a dropper rig versus a more traditional set up. Thanks!

anybody that uses a triple surgeons knot, clip the top tag then the other tag do an overhand knot around the main line and that tag will stick out at a 90 deg.......and when my tag gets too short , i have a piece of tippet that i tie the fly on first, then about an inch up from the fly i tie in a perfection loop, which gives me about a 4 " tag, then just slide that new tag above your triple surgeons knot or what ever kind of knot you use,... or as George Daniel does, just tie a clinch knot , but don`t pull it tight, slide it up to above your original knot then tighten it

What I do to run double nymphs is I run dropper tags via double surgeon knot and I never have any issues
