This simple Halyard Shackle Knot tightens on itself creating a round end that ensures the Halyard does not get stuck in mast sheave under load.
Once the halyard has been used under load it will be nearly impossible to undo the knot, the best option will be to cut the rope if you need to undo the knot.
It is a great knot to use when you are not in a position to splice as it is quick and easy to tie and will not come undone

@@BottomUPBoats I'm not discounting it in any way, just trying to help someone make a connection to help them remember it. The way fishermen tie it, it wouldn't work in rope because of how they cinch it; it works in lubricated monofilament. So how you cinch it up makes a big difference. The thig I find beautiful in knots is how they are so similar in some way. A clove hitch. Ok a double clove hitch, then triple. How about 5 or 6 wraps over before you thread it under? That's to hard to thread it so you use a nail, tube or something to keep it open so you can thread it through and someone calls it a nail knot. Then comes the uni knot. If cinched up wrong it never looks just like a nail knot so lots of people think they are different. Just like the similarity of the Halyard Shackle and the fisherman's knot. Cinching a knot is just as important to know as how to tie it. Maybe someone needs to make a video on this. Maybe me. Thanks for your comment

Quick and easy, thanks for the video! Might be a silly question, but would being underwater affect the strength of this knot? I’m thinking of using it to tie down a floating dock using cinder blocks as anchors and shackles at the other end.
@BottomUPBoats
@BottomUPBoats Жыл бұрын
Not at all, no silly question to the team at bottom up boats.... Strength will be the same, I would load it up a little prior to sending it down and it should stay rock solid. As per the update I have always needed a knife or a pick to get his one undo, even after moderate load is applied.
@Misteribel
@Misteribel 9 ай бұрын
While the knot may not be affected (in fact, it'll actually tighten more, making it near impossible to untie), most ropes have a 20 to 30% strength reduction when wet (depends on type of ropes abs material). Just FYI, in case it matters ;).

Will this work with tubular webbing and a snap hook? Since the webbing is flat.
@BottomUPBoats
@BottomUPBoats 4 жыл бұрын
All knots weaken the breaking strength of a knot, this would be the same for the flat webbing. The knot would work, I would be careful to ensure you don't put any additional wist in the webbing as you complete the knots.

I don’t think it is quite as pretty as a scaffold knot although it is obviously a close relative. Is there some reason to believe it might be stronger?
@BottomUPBoats
@BottomUPBoats 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for stopping by and sharing, I had not seen the scaffold knot before. Yes they are similar, only real way to figure out the strength would be to do a break test. I keep responding to heaps of comments like this, I think it is time that we get a load cell so we can answer these questions and share the results.

Exactly what I need, quick and efficient, because I have to do a bunch of them, and it puts the knot right at the ring and leaves virtually no tail, while not being a big knot. Space efficiency and neatness are critical for what I’m doing. Only problem, is that I will B out hundreds of pounds on them, and I need to undo them, because my line is both expensive and extremely difficult/time consuming to cut… any other ideas? Oh, the one other thing is that the line can only go through the ring once, because a single line fills the ring completely…
@BottomUPBoats
@BottomUPBoats 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it, but as you called out not for you if you have untie and retie often. With that said if there is not a lot of load applied they will untie easily enough........ I would love to suggest some alternatives, could you expand on the exact use case you need them for and I will see what I can come up with.... Without more detail it could be as easy as tie a stopper knot either side of the ring if the rope fits neatly inside. There are a couple of easy to untie option.
@multi-mason
@multi-mason 2 жыл бұрын
@@BottomUPBoats sure I’d love some suggestions. I have many short lengths of cord. It’s Kevlar cord run through hollow dyneema braid. So Kevlar core with dyneema exterior. Then I put some cable sleeving over that. The cable sleeving isn’t suited to being knotted, so I leave some of the Kevlar/dyneema cord extending beyond the sleeving on each end which needs to be tied to swivels. The end result is about 10 feet of very durable cord with swivels about every two feet. The swivels are the week point, and they break. Of course I could just use swivels that are rated way above what I need, but the weight and line profile are important because the line needs to be able to consistently wind into a spring loaded reel. I can’t use overly bulky swivels and the balance I’ve found leaves me with swivels that are strong enough, but over time and use, eventually one will break. At that point, I replace all of the swivels, because they have all been heavily stressed by the time any one breaks. It’s pretty random which one goes first, so I don’t think one section of the line takes substantially more force than the rest, but rather it comes down to minor manufacturing variation between the swivels. So just as the swivels can’t be too bulky, neither can the knots be. The knots get loaded suddenly so they can’t be something that capsizes when hit with sudden load, and because the swivels must be replaced about once every couple weeks they need to be able to be untied. It’s impractical to make new line lengths every couple weeks because the line is expensive, difficult to cut, and it’s time consuming to feed the lengths through the cable sleeving as well. Of course over time the line must be replaced, but much more rarely than the swivels. Originally I was using eye splices, and while it worked very well it’s just not practical. After I posted here before, I settled on scaffold knots, which are working, however they are a little too bulky and the line sometimes gets hung up and doesn’t reel in/out properly, which is quite troublesome. I’ve tried a few other knots, but so far the scaffold knot is working best. Of course eye splices are ideal in operation, but don’t work for replacing the swivels frequently, and the nature of the Kevlar core dyneema also makes eye splices considerably more umm… complex. The swivels I’m using have rings which are only wide enough to allow a single pass of the line through. Rope clamps could be an option, but I’ve not been able to find suitable ones. The line is only an eighth inch thick, and it seems no one makes rope clamps at that small size, and existing rope clamps for quarter inch line can’t handle the kind of weight I need anyway, and if they were manufactured at the smaller size I need, they would be even less robust. I’m considering having a machine shop make custom rope clamps for me, as that seems like my best option at this point. However maybe there is a knot I’ve yet to encounter… The knot needs to use as little line as possible, and be as small as possible. It can be either a slip loop or a fixed loop. If it’s a fixed loop then it needs to be possible to make the loop extremely small, like less than 1mm opening. If it’s a slip loop, then it shouldn’t be able to ‘easily’ slip through its own knot. Of course the loop must be tied through the ring, and while I’ve not yet seen a loop that can’t be, some are much less practical to tie through a ring. The loop must be a single line loop. The line has a dyneema exterior which is quite slick, and does make some knots less effective.

@@multi-mason WOW, that is quite a process, my first reaction if it is the swivels which are breaking would be to go for heavier ones (which I think you mentioned as an options), with that said and with all the detail you have provided I will put my think cap on for some other options. Sadly most knots will be hard to untie after load. Leave it with me and I will see what I can come up with.
