I happend to in for a fitting yesterday as an SA on a 1870's picture. The young chap did an excellent knot and I asked what it was ,an Ascot he replied. I've not heard of it so searched and came across your most excellent vid. Many thanks.

that's standard day cravat size. look those up in google images and youtube you might like that. fred astaire, many celebrities wore them back in the day. it's the same material and size he used, but without the need for a tack, and the shirt is open as the luxurious silk wraps around your neck (and not just for decoration like the ascot).it keeps you warm (as silk a natural protein is the best all weather material: warm in winter and cool in summer)

What occasions suits best the Cravat Barrel Knot?

+Koe Cars Great question. Since the Ascots and Cravats are not normally worn I feel there is freedom in the occasions that you choose to wear them. I was at an committee and directors appreciation dinner at an members only golf club and I could have easily worn a fancy necktie knot or a bow tie. I knew the past President and current President of our board wear bow ties so I wanted to make sure I was noticeably different and decided to wear the Barrel knot for the first time. I would wear it to any semi formal or black tie optional event. I would even wear it to go for a drive with top down :)

Patrick . O.k. - First of all , the inspiration: Guitarist Mason Williams on the Ed Sullivan show in1968 ( Classical Gas ) . His performance attire was retro . His ascot - is my focus . Great look, nice knot. I can confirm an ascot is NOT a cravat. All forms of 'neck ties' including ascot, tie and bow tie originated from a Cravat during the evolution of men's neck ties. An Ascot is worn under the open neck collar, a cravat worn over a closed neck collar. Ascot is less formal, Cravat formal. Why do people use he wrong terminology, it inspires no confidence in those that do.

Could be way neater, I've seen them almost manufactured looking and pressed in appearance before, with a really tight flat sock like barrel knot in the centre. The Edwardians knew how to nail that one. Oh and don't wear a cravat at Ascot people, not done. It should be, but it's all polished top hat / ivory morning waistcoat frock coat & pale blue tie if you want to get it right. If you want to impress and really push the boat out go for a detachable starched stud fastening imperial raised collar from the Barker company.

+Sten43 Since 1977 Most definitely would go for full morning dress if I had it and that remains on my shopping list for the time being. Living on the west coast in Canada it's not stuffy and I wouldn't expect anyone to call me out for dressing a little different even if it isn't period correct. Nonetheless I do enjoy wearing it on dress up occasions.
