Thanks for this video, Kevin. I followed it closely to tie my first intruder. Just getting into steelheading!

Thanks John - this one is pretty straight forward and color combos are endless, Olive and an orange butt or Black over green would be 2 other color combos that would look great.

Why not put the ostrich in a loop as well? It stands up straighter and will be more of a teardrop profile. Try also leaving some of those under hair in the Fox it will make your prop more pronounced for that tear drop profile. Just some ideas. Fly looks good.

Hey Jason - I'm not a big fan of ostrich in loops 1- it doesn't allow for flexibility in placement and density 2- even though it will stand up, once under flow while fishing that benefit is lost. I think tying in reverse would give a more permanent "prop". I hear what you are saying about the fuller shoulder with leaving more under fur in the loop... but then you really need to ensure you really brush it out and with that fuller shoulder it will have impact on bulk when trying to sink a fly and when casting. But I agree the under fur can really to profile (good or bad). Thanks for checking out the video!

Kevin Hospodar one last thing I thought of... a trick I learned in AK. If you make your fox just a little longer you can put your dumbbell eyes back on the shank and actually cover them with the fox. Does a few things, covers the pesky looking dumbbells and also helps keep that prop up. Try it out! I’m always looking for ideas too keep it up mate!

good one - I do that with coneheads on tubes, seen it done on shanks but never thought to give it a go.

There is no such thing as a single station intruder. Great fly but intruder is not a broad term for flies tied on shanks. This mislabeling has caused a lot of confusion amongst new tires. It really needs to be addressed.
@MichaelKuczynski-u7o4 ай бұрын
What’s confusing? Kevin said it was a single station intruder . To me that means it’s tied in the style of an intruder but instead of two stations it’s one . If he did the exact same thing twice on the shank would that make it an intruder?

@@MichaelKuczynski-u7o there is no such thing as a single station intruder. That’s like calling a Dee fly a Spey fly. An Intruder is a specific platform which includes two stations and a hollow body. If the fly does not meet those parameters, it is not that thing. Might as well call a Hoh Bo Spey a single station intruder by the logic you’re proposing. As a fly designer…it is very frustrating when people just call things they are not. Leeches aren’t Intruders yet many people call them that. Would you call a garage door the front door? Likely not.

@@jonathanfarmer6010 as fly designer I’m sure you know that when Ed first started tying intruders he used a single streamer hook . So if you now tie it on a shank or on a tube is it not an intruder anymore even if it has two stations . I’ve been tying for 40+ years myself so I have a pretty good idea on how this all works . Call it what you want the method is the same and as Kevin called it a single station intruder , that’s what it is . I guess you could call it a new name for a new fly , is that better.
@jonathanfarmer60104 ай бұрын
@@MichaelKuczynski-u7o 😂 that’s absurd. When one of the original designers changed from a hook to a cut shank it’s no longer an intruder? Your lack of logic is astounding.
@jonathanfarmer60104 ай бұрын
@@MichaelKuczynski-u7o you do realize that there was a progression for Ed and that whole crew from tying on a single hook to a shank right? I was affiliated with OPST for years and have had this conversation. Given that Ed is one of the owners still…I think I have a pretty good grasp on what I’m talking about. But if you want to argue for the sake of argument…go ahead. It doesn’t make your logic make sense. You can’t say the sky is green and it be true.
