It speeds up the "batching" process - otherwise you'd have to wait the 6-8 hours for the soda ash and the dye to react.

i dont think it matters as long as you know what your doing. i dye the black lines first so that way i know where the inside of the peace sign is and where the outside is

yes you do. soda ash is what make the dye absorb into the fabric. without the soda ash the dye will not absorb correctly and the shirt will be almost all white

i use a normal food microwave. but you shouldnt use a microwave you use for food becasue of cross contamination. it should be only for tie dye

@StrawberryLynx your supposed to use 1 cup of soda ash per 5 gallons of water. then i keep using the same bucket of water until it runs out

you can use any marker or highlighter just make sure its washable if its not washable it wont come out when you rinse it

@LuvDanii No you don't HAVE to, it optional But some dyes/powders already have soda ash mixed in so just follow the instructions that are given with your box/pack etc.!

How did you determine 1:45 in the microwave? I'm having my first tye dye party next week and would like my guess be able to take their shirts with them microwaved, rinsed and washed. So if I microwave I don't have to wait 6 to 8 hours, right? Thanks

I just started using my microwave, I keep a cup of water in it just to be safe, be sure all the fabric is damp so no fires, and all my stuff is brighter it appears to me. I've been cooking dyes, 5 to 7 minutes, let sit 10to15 minutes and rinse, so far? So good dye, cook, rinse. I see no harm except my microwave is blue inside.
