Tie dye is back in fashion just recently. Which is great thanks for sharing from New Zealand

You need to make sure the shirt you're dying is 100 or at least 90% cotton and don't feel you need blank white, pale grey works fine and I think shirts with prints and/or lettering look even better tie dyed. Vinegar and salt is a very effective fixative especially if you're not dying enough to use up a whole bottle of store bought fixative. Also put some thought into colours and try to avoid letting colours that will turn into brown touch, in general less colours is better. If you want the colours to run through the shirt and fill the white space, just put it in diluted fixative for only 10 minutes then machine wash by itself then straight into tumble dryer, this will fade the dark parts but fill in the shirt with colour while still maintaining your pattern.

May I ask how much vinegar and Salt exactly need to be used? Im using a Small bottle but I don't know how much

You can add even more texture and design to the shibori design by wrapping and binding it with string, dental floss or artificial sinew (a waxy sort of stranded string that you can find in the leather arts area of your craft store, or from a leathercraft shop like Tandy, etc.). Each of these will yield a different result depending on how snugly you pull the wrap. Sinew can be pulled very tightly and it will resist the dye because of its waxy texture... it's also a good material for tying other folds to make for really good definition. Dental floss and kite string work, too, but it's harder to pull them as tight as sinew... which is okay if you are going for a softer tie and a little more color blending. I used dental floss on my arashi shirt and it worked out fine. DO NOTE... on the shibori, if you cinch it tightly enough AND if there is a fairly thick hem on your shirt, you might be able to create a stripe where the dye doesn't completely penetrate. This is called "resist", and it's a characteristic that you can use to create designs within designs. Or, it can be a screw-up if you don't account for it! My shirt picked up a resist-stripe from the hemline because I didn't think about it when I was wrapping my shirt. Nonetheless, it made a very nice, subtle light stripe across my arashi design, and it looks amazing. Just be aware that this can happen, and decide whether you want to include it or not.

Colors are super faded. It is recommended to let the dye soak for a full 24 hours to allow the dye to fully adhere. My tie dye comes out with more vibrant colors when I let it soak for at least 24 hours.

Also that’s a lot of white, if that’s the look you’re going for than great but if you want more color you need to apply the dye between the creases and crevices of it. And he didn’t apply that much......

I sell tie dye....these are definitely not the best methods 1. Whatever you’re dying should be DAMP (not wet) before tying it. This makes for using less dye, and the water will disperse the dye farther into the fabric so there’s a lot less white when you untie it. Before dying I soak the fabric in soda ash, and after dying as well. I find this works the best for the longevity of the color to stay in the clothing. 2. It needs to sit for 24 hours, 6-8 is the minimum, don’t rush it....you’re going to end up with less vibrancy in the colors & the dye won’t stay in the fabric very long before it becomes very faded. 3. Wash after dying with COLD water and minimal detergent, like with colored hair hot water washes out dye. 4. Put the squeeze bottle’s tip in between the folds of the fabric and squeeze...again, makes for a lot less white in the fabric

I bought multiple boxes of RIT dye and the directions say that for every 1 lb of fabric you will dye to use 3 gallons of liquid. I am only making 1 kids t-shirt for a school project and don’t know the water to powder dye ratio especially if I am making the liquid in old style ketchup squeeze bottles. If anyone knows that would be very helpful. Thanks!
