The Jiggy Fry is a fantastic jigged streamer pattern designed by George Daniel. Specifically designed for Euro Nymphing, he came up with this pattern to represent small trout or salmon fry. It shines in the early springtime after the Brown Trout hatch, but you will also have success all year, as it does a great job of representing other small baitfish.
If George made it, then it is worth having in your box.
Tight lines!
Cory
Recipe:
Bead: 3.8mm Black Nickel (3.3mm-4.6mm)
Hook: Hanak 450 size 12
Thread: Veevus GSP 30D white

I have always used a stopper knot when I build tag rigs. But I have always used multiple stopper knots for the different depths. Using a SINGLE stopper knot is GENIUS as the ones above the lowest one is not necessary and the line is "cleaner". . Cory, a big thanks for sharing your tips. By the way, iInstead of tying 2 tippets together and cutting off the tags, I just use a figure 8 knot using the main line. What do you think? I also use a Double Davy knot to attach the tag because t takes seconds to tie on. It is also smaller, gathers less moss, and creates less drag than a perfection loop. I also use a Double Davy for attaching the fly because the 16/20 knot requires too much length to tie. A double davy requires as little as 3" , and never fails except when I am fishing for 27"+ monsters and 3X tippet.

Thanks, Cory! I am learning so much from you. I've eased back into fly tying by starting with streamers, mostly learned by watching Kelly Galloup's videos. He of course leans large, so this example of a small fry is timely. Time to head up to the Smith River and fry it out!

Cory, I live in the PNW where we don’t have brown trout. How would you suggest modifying this recipe to look more like a rainbow or sculpin fry?
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 4 ай бұрын
Scott, You can tie this using olive grizzly marabou and black or olive ice dub and it will be a great small sculpin. You can also use a natural grizzly color with pearl ice dub and that would make a good rainbow fry (I do that as well).

Cory is that the only color you tie them in? And George uses a copper on his body you like the gold better or never tried with the copper?
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 8 ай бұрын
This is the original way George ties this. Fulling Mill changed it a bit and uses copper (and maybe even olive marabou). But I stick to his original recipe. If you try copper, I'm sure it would work.

Very nicely done. I love the fact that you take so much care tying all your flies. Normally I fish nymphs, but as of last year, I also started to fish streamers. I will tie this fly for the upcoming season. Do you tie Sparkle Minnows? If yes, I'd love to see you tie that fly. I tied a version I found on KZbin and made a mess. Still vacuuming the house from bits of gold ICE Dub... ;-) Thanks for this post.

Thanks so much, Schmoonkie. Nice of you to say. Adding streamers is definitely a great tactic to have in your box of tricks. I don’t fish the Sparkle Minnow-but will check it out. Always fun when you find the random feather/dubbing around the house!

ODT...just found your site and subscribed. My expertise for the last 50 years has been crappie, smallmouth and largemouth. I live in north Alabama but recently took a trip to Tellico Plains in Tennessee and I must say trout have addicted me. I know how to work a fly rod but my question to you is what is a good mid grade set up for someone who is not real experienced. I toe all my own baits and the fly's I used on the Tellico river were basically waltz worms and a modified frenchie. Both of the fly Inused were size 14 and 16 and yes before anybody asks....they were barbless. Can you recommend a food rod in the 10 foot length that would be good for nymphing and throwing fly like a elk hair caddis? I am new to this so excuse my ignorance. In 4 days we caught really nice rainbows and browns up to 3 pounds. We did catch a lot of smaller fish but the fact I am not a fly fisherman I thought I did well especially using a fly rod. I have fly fished for tarpon and bonefish so I know the mechanics of a fly rod and even know how to roll cast. Can you provide some help on rod and real selection. I really don't want to spend 1000's of dollars.

200-400 for both rod and reel. Also, is there a such thing as having a fly rod and reel set up that covers all presentations?
