Why do you use hackle instead of ostrich herl?

You absolutely could! No reason other than sticking to one recipe, but half the fun is that you could put a wide variety of materials in a substitutes and still catch plenty of fish.

an older fisherman, I like to "heave and leave" a multi-fly set up with larger foam pattern as the indicator tied to 3x, a medium-sized BH or weighted nymph or emerger tied to 4x two feet below and a second smaller nymph or emerger tied to 5x below the larger nymph. Is this a good sub-surface callibaetis nymph or emerger that you recommend for this type of set up?... Or do you recommend another?

It is an excellent Callibaetis Nymph. You may find better success while stripping this fly, however. Callibaetis are excellent swimmers. Therefore some movement and undulation with various retrieve styles will help animate this imitation to look lifelike.

Thanks for the nice tutorial! Is this pattern meant to be fished in shallow water? Would a bead or a few wraps of lead wire alter the effectiveness?

Yes and yes, but the best place to fish it is where you're noticing structure, depth change, vegetation, or even spotting actual fish! Based on the depth of where you see those things, add/subtract weight accordingly.

Denny Rickards original from his book had No UV on the shellback. The shellback was always the weakest point after a few takes.
