Learn how to train a Harris hawk to fly free in part 1 here • HOW TO TRAIN A HAWK | ...
This is part 2 of the How to train a hawk series. In this video we learn to tie a knot with one hand. Its important for falconers and bird of prey keepers to learn how to tie the falconry knot. Training hawks involves more than just training the bird, you have to train yourself too! Tying a falconers knot is one of the most important things you can learn when staring to work with birds of prey. I used to work at a falconry center and as a test I once counted how many times I tied a falconry knit in one day, it was over 40 times!
Now I own 9 of my own birds I still spend large amounts of my day tying a falconry knot. The knot is used to tether the bird to the perch. Correctly knowing how to tether your hawk is vital when training the hawk. This video is about how to tether a bird of prey and not really about how to train a bird of prey. If you would like to see how to train the hawk to fly free then follow the link at the top!

Very clear Dan. I’m glad you said about the leash length that’s just as important and I always forget.

People usually think the skill is tying the knot but the real skill is knowing how to get your leash the right length even if the jesses or perch change

Great video, now I always carry a sting in my pocket to practice. Could you do a video on the general equipment needed in falconry?

Excellent! Did you manage to follow the steps easy enough? I have taught several people in person but never over video so wasn’t sure how well it would translate

@@MercerFalconry yeah the steps were fantastic, replaying the first looping on the draw a few times did the job. I do think, if you don't mind a suggestion, that another video with clear steps, possibly with numbers on the screen, might be helpful for younger audiences as well as older ones.

hello thank you for all these videos, one question please, what is the type of additional coating on the perch at 7:43 ? approximately how much is the diameter with the two thicknesses? Cordially.

I have had more than one bird untie their knot. Luckily no one was injured; I'd rather be safe than have a vet bill.

What happens if the bird tries to fly away old being tied up ?
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean by ‘tied up’ but if they jump and flap while tethered the equipment stops them going anywhere and they just jump back onto their perch. All the equipment is removed when they are flying free though
