Great vid!!!!!! One question, would this be able to handle heavy nymphs, hanging under it? Even tungsten bead? As a DUO ( dry indicator with wet dropper ) set up??? Many thanks on this vid, looking forward to tying this one! Cheers from Australia.

Yes, absolutely! I fish droppers with tungsten beads in the 2.0 to 2.5 mm size frequently, size of the dry fly and the floatant you use will definitely affect your ability to go heavier with the nymph.

Whats protecting the hackle? Would you rib this with mono?

Thanks for the question! here's a note from the tyer: "You can add mono or an XS/Fine wire for added durability. Tying it without allows me to tie a bunch more quickly. There are times I have fished flies with hackles that have come undone with what seemed like greater success than a perfectly looking fly. If you do utilize ribbing it will reverse the process of tying in the hackle. You will add your ribbing first and then wrap the hackle rewards similar to how I tied the Elk Hair in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYS0noaOeJiXfq8 "

I was just wondering if there is a reason to tie the foam in on the side of the hook rather than on the top of the shank. I know it is not in keeping with the original recipe for the fly, but I've gotten great buoyancy using snowshoe rabbit for my wings, any thoughts on this alteration ? Thanks very much.

For me, tying it on the side of the hook helps me get the first wraps down neatly. Snowshoe is an interesting substitution. I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t make a killer fly. The Usual is a great pattern due to it’s use of Snowshoe Rabbit.
