How to Tie the Improved Merkin Crab - Fly Fishing and Dreams

This method of tying the Merkin Crab incorporates a technique that prevents the claws of the crab from fouling under the bend of the hook while fishing the fly. Great design, I am not so sure I would trust just an over hand knot but it is your fly. I like the simplicity of the tie. Do you ever brush out the fibers or do you let the water do it? All the best, thanks for sharing. Sean

why is the hair tied on the bottom of the crab? the hair adds bouyancy. if we want the crab to turn over properly hair should be on top.

i agree--i find that with a light lead and especially with fairly beefy hook like an 800s that a merkin will likely ride hook-point-down if the fibers are not on the top of the hook shank. I believe even with heavy leads that it'll still swim better if tied this way.
