First and only video about DC TIG alum I see on youtube . Didn't even know it was a thing Thanks for all the knowledge pops

I love the fact that pops had the old school knowledge. I learned welding a long long time ago. This is back when a continuous bead was considered more professional than the "Stack of Dimes" look. So I completely understand his point of view. I would love to see you and pops do a future video using flux covered arc rods to do an aluminum weld with 100% argon on DC.

In the “old’n” days it was called heli-arc welding for a reason. It was dc welding aluminum with helium gas. As he said using helium gas the electric arc travels across to the base metal easier (thus increasing voltage). AC current welding aluminum has a cleaning action in one half of its phase. If you look closely at most tig machines you’ll notice a diagram of the weld puddle during the different times in its phase. The dc portion will have a narrower bead face with deeper penetration, while the ac portion is a wider puddle with less penetration; adjusting the knob setting between the two is determined by the thickness of aluminum you’re welding.

I learned that a long time ago from an old timer, and have been welding for many years. I went to welding supply place to get some supplies to weld some heavy aluminum, and a fresh tank of argon. Dude at the place told I didn’t know what I was talking about and that there was no way to DC Tig weld aluminum, I took the parts in after and he didn’t believe me even when I showed him.

You have to use a porcentave of argon and Helium. Example; - 75/25 or even 50/50 like for Brass. The more Helium the more fluidic and cleaner the puddle Becomes.

If you have been welding as long as you claim the reason, we A/C WELD is to break the oxide layer away . D/C does not break that ceramic layer away, which can be introduced into your weld pool .This is the reason D/C is no longer used .

When we can use DC or AC current for Aluminum
@fluxngutz46672 жыл бұрын
AC is the most common aluminum welding you’ll see but DC is more for thicker aluminum, deep penetration, for clean welds no spitting like AC, and weld speed.

Can it be possible to use only argon gas to dc tig?
@domwirtanen4683 Жыл бұрын
Argon doesn't produce a hot enough arc the burn past the oxide layer, you probably could but it would put down anything halfway decent.
@joelmcclellan1050 Жыл бұрын
@MrBuboyangeles Absolutely! Argon gas cleans the weld puddle better than helium. But, as with all processes of welding there are better ways of doing things. If you have an ac machine, the ac electric phase of your weld cleans the puddle better than just the gas. If you’re welding a thinner plate of aluminum that doesn’t need the “increased voltage effect “ that you would get from helium gas, then by all means use argon gas. Mechanically clean the weld area very good, first.

This is cool I mean obviously I didn't know that you could do this and I'm just a beginner welder myself so thanks for the video but is there any instance where I mean obviously AC is and just running argon is cheaper and just straightforward so is there any job or some kind of instance in a project that this would be more of a requirement or a better solution or better freezing to do this by doing the more expensive weld obviously with the helium and the mixture and you know all that kind of stuff having to go on compared to just your straight argon and straight AC welder sorry about going all the way around my elbow to get to my thumb there but I'm just trying to get it explained the best way in the how to we use AC today and AC seems to be working just fine maybe the point of this video to show that you can use DC but I'm thinking more like is there certain things that might be built that this type of welding with The helium and the things like that would make a better weld or stronger weld and hold better because of whatever kind of situation maybe pops knows a a job that would benefit from having to do the extra money in the extra spending for something like this thanks God bless
@InchFab2 жыл бұрын
He explained this in the first few minutes of the video, but I'll try to answer your question. If you can find helium to run dc aluminum, you'll get better penetration on thicker base metal with less preheat and fewer amps, thanks to the way helium acts with the arc. Unfortunately, helium isn't just expensive, it's hard to get now. I live in Las Vegas and I have to send a bottle to salt lake city if I want it. AC is just more practical in every way. If you absolutely need to weld aluminum and all you have is a DC machine, this is how you do it. These days, with inverter machines, there's really no need to run straight DC on aluminum. There is an advanced pulse program that some machines can run that switch between AC and DC- for a very short burst while still using 100% argon. It's amazing how much more penetration you get from just a blip of DC-. Anyway, have a good day. Cheers.
@joaquinmurana98292 жыл бұрын
So thickness plays a huge roll in why welding aluminum in dc is superior. When welding aluminum it dissipates heat very quickly but welding dc using helium is very deep penetrating and inputs the the heat quickly so you can achieve a quality weld without all the tungsten spit of AC. You can weld 1/2” aluminum plate without preheat. Try welding 1/2” plate on AC without preheat and you can compare. I used to weld 2” thick aluminum molds with minimum preheat with 0 failures. We tried welding with AC but we had so much tungsten spit even with keeping the part hot that we decided that it was more cost effective to use dc with 100% helium. Hope this helps. If you need a more comprehensive explanation I will put another video out with moxie.

@scidork2 жыл бұрын
Both AC and DC call for cleaning all the materials and using the correct filler rod, so the only difference I noticed was using helium, right?
@raulduke852 жыл бұрын
@@scidork in every material u'd better clean base material, but if you know what you are doing and what'sthe use for the parts you are welding you can skip this part, especially on aluminum; you have ac current to clean the material and as long as you have just to clean some oil/wd40 and so on, you can just burn it , wait for the puddle to be clean and add material. obviously she described the way to go that a teacher would teach you at school; but in real world things don't always get done how they teach you at school: you have to know what you are doing. Helium is just useful to her because she has a small welding machine capable of 255 amps peak current: helium is a hotter gas than argon (can't really explain in english, but at same amp you'll have increased volt of your arc with helium mix, approximatly 18 v with helium mix vs 16 volt with argon; so it will be like having a bigger machine, but also the arc with helium will be more focused and the alumin won't be able to spread heat that much on the part); but keep in mind that unless you live in the usa, in europe helium is crazy expensive and if you regularly weld aluminum, especially thick stuffs, it will be cheaper to get a bigger machine, in the range of the 400/600 amps, or if you can, preheat the parts. there are so many different ways to get the job done properly, you need just to get some experience: if you do it 8/10 hours per day as a job, u'll quickly learn what you need to do. tig welding is about a good hand and being able to control the puddle, so you have just to know what to look at; if you are good enough you don't even need a support for your hands, it's just practice

@@InchFab how would you know, have you received the Holy Ghost, no, so you speak of things you know nothing about, Sodom and Gomorrah but you can go and put your feet on,right now, they wishes it was just a fairytale, the walls of Jericho which you can put your eyes on right now, if you want to fly that far that is, they wished it was just a fairy tale, there are marks all over the earth that was written and witnesses, many thousands of years ago, not a hundred years ago, not even a thousand years ago, but 6 thousand years ago, that you with unbelieving eyes can go, and touch, and then there is today, where God is still pouring out the holy ghost on people with the evidence of speaking in other tougues, which happened 2 thousand years ago, and happened to me 30 years ago, I'll never forget the day, when God filled me, when he's word told me if you do this, then this will happen, and it took me a week to get something that should've only took a few seconds, because as much as I believed in God, it's hard for the carnal mind to understand how am I going to speak I tougues, but a week later I remember it like yesterday, I wouldn't even thinking about getting the holy ghost at that time all I remember is I just wanted to go and love on God and I was like 2000 people maybe 1500 people there at the church, and I remember raising my hands up and just started praising God and the next thing I know I started speaking in tongues, I remember looking down toward my mouth wondering how long it was going to last, because it never happened to me before, but that was told that it would happen if I did this 2000 years ago it's not just some store it's made up you know 100 years ago or last week, it happened to 120 people on the day of Pentecost and then 3000 people the day after that, all I can tell you is what I've seen and know, I was 21 when that happened to me, the creator of all things told me to repent and be baptized in Jesus name for the remission of my sins and I would be filled with the Holy ghost and there would be a sign to all that are filled, they would speak in tougues as God gave the ability, and it happened to me, to my children, to countless others that I've seen, and maybe you'll get to experience it as well, I've seen God fill people that you would've never thought that person would ever be a person that God would pick, but I've seen it, to my surprise, and the same thing that happened to me, is the same thing that happened 2000 years ago and has been and will continue to until the day of the lord, all I can say is God has lied to me yet, if he said it would happen, then it did and that's all I can tell you, I pray you find the mercy of the lord one day, and get that tangible touch of the living God, cause you'll never forget it and you'll never be the same again, God bless you in Jesus name
