How to tint residential Flat Glass like a pro By: Best Reflections Window Tinting

This is a tutorial on how to tint windows like a pro. From beginning to end. This will be covering how to tint Flat Glass or residential windows.
This is a job that we did on a condo in Downtown Asheville, NC.
This is for demonstration purposes and meant to only help other professionals in the field.

Love this video. What I learnt!!! Only ever touch the border of the tint which will be cut away. You cannot have too much cleaning fluid. Window cleaner is good. I bought bulk and it says on the container, good for tinted windows. Im sure they all are. Cut your tint first by using the upside down method with the clear protector facing up. Only make it have 2cm border room all around as the tint sticks to everything. (cheers +WAYNE JOHNSON) Peel the backing straight away using the sticky tape method on both sides of a corner, then pull them apart. (cheers +Tim Spriggs). Just leave the tint nearby ready for grabbing. Now go ahead and do your cleaning. When prep-ing the glass with cleaner, spray beyond the glass aggressively as if the tint touches, it wont stick there. E.g. the whole window frame. I squeegee the edges firmly (with 5-way tool) before cutting, not loosely like in the video. Lastly, if you take too long and the cleaning fluid dries a bit before applying the tint. Clean the window and start again as you may get the cloudy look. Happened to my first window as i took longer to prepare the tint, not too bad). Additional... Have pets? Vacuum the area thoroughly. I mean, the floor, the frame and even running across the glass. Then, change clothes. Then start the razor blade wet clean process. Spray the tint! if it touches itself or something else, you are screwed. Spraying greatly reduces the risk. When the tint was at the end of roll and would not lie flat, I would weight down one side with a couple of weights (sprayed with window cleaner) and a couple of large bull dog clips on the far side. The bull dog clips allowed me to move the tint into position without it rolling back up from the bottom up while carrying. Once touching on the window, bye bye clips. I did not use the production edge as my frame rubber was never even. I just centred the sheet and cut all 4 sides. Also, I cut the corners from the window out so the film would come straight off after doing a full axis cut. Starting with the 5-way tool... I always started in the middle and went up, then down, then side to side. A cross. I then worked each quadrant towards its respective corners. I found I had much less chance of creases. Actually, ended up being zero.

Gotta say that this video is soooooo awesome. My hubby and I tinted our house windows after watching this video about 3-4 times. The finished result is not as professional as we would like but we are 1st timers and there are a couple of mistakes we made. However, it looks good and the house is soooooooo much cooler because we have double glass doors and a kitchen window that catches the most sun until it goes down. Rooms with windows facing a different direction are much cooler. Now I can stand to sit in my living room from 2-5pm. Thank you for this very detailed and easy to follow video. When I install flat glass film I usually use a paper towel with the hard card or squeegee on all the edges. this is so that the paper towel catches the extra water and doesn't go back into the film with dirt. pretty good video

DO NOT use paper towel. You will have thousands of paper fibers caught between the glass and tint.

Here is another tip--to start the separation of the film, use two small sections of clear tape, put them on both sides, briefly squeeze together, then pull apart.

Even better use a colored tape - much easier to see the tape and the separation. I tend to tape my film to the plaster wall and then peel the release liner away from the film, spraying fluid as i go so no dust can land on the static side.......Ensure floor is wet so no dust can lift off the floor

Good demo but one major thing to bear in mind ... don't do it on a sunny day. The sun will dry tiny areas of the wetted glass and cause the film to stretch when hard edged flat.

Awesome job bro! Look into reverse rolling when removing the film. I usually make my cuts with the protective liner on. Then peel liner back half way while it is still on the glass and wet it then lay liner back down. Do it on both sides to get all the glue side wet. Then roll it up and prep your glass. And you can reverse roll back on the glass allowing the liner to come unrolled as you go. This way your glue side is never without the liner until it hits the glass. Has been very helpful to me. Hope it helps someone else.

I will use a step ladder and have my son stand on it to hold the edges so I can get started, while standing on another ladder. While he is doing that, I will pull and smooth all the way down. Thank goodness my son is very patient with me. Lol. It probably will take a while. I hope it works on the first try. I will do both sides. After this, this I will do the south windows. Nice!

Home Depot sells 3 inch wide razor blades. I use them for auto detailing, speeds up the job of detailing a window and ensured I get every little piece of gunk/imbedded contaminate off the glass.

+Rusty's Window Tinting As opposed to all the helpful videos you've posted? It's easy to criticize when you've done nothing yourself. Should I ever require assistance in tinting, I'd call on Best Reflections before I'd even consider Rusty's Window tinting. If anything you come off jealous of his performance. Maybe you should shake off all the "rust" and make a video of your own before calling out someone else offering assistance to DIY'ers.

+Jon Diaz Thanks for not being too rude in your reply to my nasty comment. I haven't posted any videos for DIY tinters because most people don't have the patience or eye-for-detail to do a good job anyway. I'm glad someone is trying to help but I'm also glad it looks tedious and difficult. Let me explain: I've been tinting for over 25 years and I would never recommend that (comical) technique of peeling the liner off. It's very easy to get creases in the film. The way I peel the backing off is much quicker and easier than this and I'd be happy to explain to anyone that needs help. Also, I think it's a mistake to clean the window then lay out film on the floor, which would make dust fly up onto the glass. But I think he mentions that in the video. Rusty's Window Tinting to be honest this video looks like a DIY video. I've never installed a film like that and never seen a film installed like that. Yes the end result ended with film on the door but it's not the most efficient and effective way to do it. The way the film got peeled, you are just asking for contamination. The static electricity would have sucked dust all over the film, not to mention the dust that landed on the glass while he was peeling it. You should always cut film first. Then clean window, use reverse roll method for minimum to no contamination. Each to their own I guess

Can either drop roll the film to easily remove liner or just peel a little bit, stick it on the glass, then peel the rest... But if you do the last method, make sure the liner is really clean. I've used the stepping on it method too.. lol.. but it can be kinda tricky!

Wow, you made that look easy. The cutting the corners is the hardest for me, the film trimming tool Gila gives you in the installation kit for trimming is crap, I'm gonna use a razor blade like you did.

Hey bud, just some tips: cut the film in your shop do not cut it at the customer house doesn’t look good for your business, do revers roll for your film or use the window beside, stick the film and pull off the liner using water and soap. There is no need to use your feet and straggle because when you remove the liner the glue from the film pick up all dust round you. For cutting the extra film use the 5-way tool to leave a gap between the film and the rubber on door, think about the weather the rubber expand on summer and shrink on winter it my push the film on summer and it will come off on sides, just if you care about your customers and your warranties. I use a micro fiber towel with a squeegee or hard card on the edges to catch all the water from the frame. This will help ensure that water doesn't go back into your film, because it will..

Danny G mirror solar film is one of the best heat reflection films, it's also great for privacy through the day and blocks infrared rays. Really depends on the manufacturer

You making it harder than it seems I tint car windows and it's basically the same process and not hard at all. You should never peel the protective layer on the film until its been measured and cut and ready to install that way you don't get any dust on it

If you cut it first. It's way easier and cleaner. And if you use a card to push the film into the corner while you cut it it makes a way better cut. Push the car to the corner and then put your blade between the card and the corner and then drag both the knife and the card to make a very straight cut

all you need is an 8" blue max w fusion handle, 6" triumph scraper and reverse roll the film. you would cut your install time in half.

mastertinter731 that's what I use. I only use 1" scraper on auto installations unless there are stickers or stubborn Grit. I also use a diamond squeegee to guide for cutting film to make sure I remove all excess water. Unless it's a dark film, I cut it with Olfa flush on the gaskets. On last squeegee pass I wrap my 5 way tool with paper towel. You'd be surprised how much water is left behind after blue max sqeegee passes

Internally installed Solar Control Film can cause thermal stress in laminated glass ( cracks and/or full glass failure ). A proffesional installer should test the glass with a merlin laser gauge. If in doubt, always use an external grade film. Shorter life span than internally film, much harder to achieve a good quality finish but significantly higher heat gain reduction.

Nice one man , digging this video big time . Hey so I bought GILA brand at lowes today $34.99 I have 2 simple jobs both doors 1 is approx 26 x 37 and the other much the same 2x3 1/2 feet ....I think I got it any downward thumbs for buying GILA or will it suffice for such a small job
