Great video! When I take cuttings off of coleus I root them in water and I just about get 100% of them to root. I've never tried putting them just directly in potting soil I would worry I'd lose too many of them. That was a great coleus you found to make into a topiary without main leader going up the center. That was a great visual to show everyone I'm going to try to make a topiary from one of my cutting sedum going to try to root it's August now Summer's almost gone so it'll be fun to try to save it over the winter. I guess my favorite plants are angel wing begonias and coleus and white orchid collection. I also like the elephant ear family alocasia colocation and caladiums. My favorite thing to do with my plants is to propagate and I think the reason why my coleus plants are so full as I'm always looking 4 stems that I can take the cutting without damaging the shape of the plants

Thanks, I was so inspired. I have coleus in large pots in my driveway and I cut them back monthly to encourage branching, so I had a tray of cuttings that were well rooted. I stopped the video after I saw your established plant and went and pruned 4 different colors/type of coleus to start topiaries. Thanks for the great idea.

Many years ago I bought a coleus topiary when I knew almost nothing about gardening. It had tiny leaves in the maroon color. It didn't last very long. 😟 Last year, I overwintered a lime green coleus and had many cuttings I started in water. I'm going to try poking them directly in soil and hopefully I won't have to deal with dampening off. A friend gave me a "Wicked Witch" coleus that I will definitely try overwintering. (Also in MN.)

As I'm watching more of this video it just dawned on me if you can't find a plant like the first one you used take a nice tall cutting rooted in water so you can be sure it's going to root and then that way you have a nice straight stem for your start to make a topiary. I also always use a polymer called soil moist and with my potting media and I also put osmocote in it even if it says it has fertilizer added. My coleus absolutely love the soil moist crystals for a couple of reasons I think. They absorb 50 times their weight in water and when you root a coleus cuttings and water and then put them in soil they adapt very well to the soil after growing in water. And then during the summer when you have windy and sunny days that dry out the soil in the plant there's always that excess moisture because of the crystals holding water and suspension for the plant. The second reason I think they like the soil moist crystals is because they expand and contract and keep the soil from getting compacted and help aerate the soil and that way more oxygen gets to the roots and the soil doesn't ever get soggy for root rot. I have coleus right now in pots that are over 3 feet high and absolutely gorgeous that are planted this way. My coleus I bought that were the same size as the one you started the video with one of them has filled out a hanging basket. I can't believe another one that was the size of your beginning coleus plant it's now over 3 ft tall and bushy and beautiful I'm going to try to get them film so I can post them on my KZbin channel. My KZbin channel is just my name and even if no one else watches the video I'll have a record of these beautiful coleus from this year. They've mostly had rain water when they've been watered because I save the rainwater and all my empty water jugs

I think you need to do another video on how to take care of these over the winter because coleus can be tough to keep them alive and our homes during the winter. Do you miss the do you have a humidifier near it how did you keep it alive over the winter.... and by the way what a pretty coleus just you decided to make into that beautiful topiary. I'll have to watch out for a coleus like that one next year! Thank you so much for this video

I will show the progress of my coleus topiaries over the winter. I might fail with keeping them alive but it is worth a shot. I do have a humidifier, but my plant room is in my garage and the humidifier created mold issues on my walls. Thanks for watching

@@floralnhardy7332 I will try to do a topiary with one of my coleus has and maybe we can keep each other posted on our results. I have a coleus right now that's three feet high and bushy it's the shape of a Christmas tree in a way. It's absolutely gorgeous I've never had one like this. I'm going to try and take a video and post it on my channel. I've been able a couple different winners to keep my favorite coleus plants alive. Two of the ones I have right now are from last year one of them was reduced last year in September. And it's gorgeous also probably about two and a half feet tall and shape triangular shaped like a Christmas tree and full.

Hello, thanks for the video ! This is really inspiring. I know you bought some of them from the store but, do you have an idea of what I could do to have a long stem with side branches like the one we can see in the first part of the video ? If I dont prune them, they all get long and thin with no branches on the sides, just leaves. Also, do you still have them today ? Thank you !
@floralnhardy7332

I choose coleus that have smaller leaves and I keep taking the bottom leaves off until it gets to a certain height. The coleus in the thumbnail is trailing lava rose, which I grew from a cutting for a long time. It looked like a lollipop for the longest time and I just kept pinching it back. Eventually, it started to branch out. It put on most of its growth in the summer when it got hot and humid. I don't have them anymore. I did have the topiary coleus that is in the thumbnail for a long time and then my grow light fell on it and crushed half of it. I had that one for a long time and was super bummed. Thanks for watching
