How To: Topping Lift

my topping lift on my Mac 26S is a simple line from near the top of the mast down to the boom. When sail is up, topping lift just hangs there loose, but still connected to the boom. When sail is down, end of boom is supported by topping lift. Adjust the height of the end of the boom by lifting it with one hand and just wrap the topping lift around the boom once or twice. Presto, done!

So the topping lift is not disconnecting from the boom and used to raise the main ?
