The tyre kicker for me of buying a Brompton was the 'brompton traveller' as I like to tour on my full sized bike the fact that if the weather took a turn for the worst or injury etc. I can just hop on a train/bus, agreed, Brompton should be giving you some freebies.awesome inspiring uploads .

On my 2nd Brompton, this one a 6-speed with a rear rack and a lighting system. I've lived in South Korea, the U.S. and now Budapest with them. Superb commuting bike, and much better than you might think over distances. In Hungary, I did a 5-day bike around Lake Balaton and its 150-mile circumference. Practical, reliable, well-made and fun! Pure enjoyment!

Hi Gianni. Inspired by reading your book and watching some of your videos my wife and I did our first mini-tour on our Bromptons last week, across Anglesey and the North Wales coast.. I used your rucksack attachment method, using a bar made from a section of old bike pump with a couple of light practice golf balls on the end. For a backpack we used a waterproof Elops one from Decathlon - very inexpensive and perfect for the purpose. Thanks, and please keep posting your rides! Jonathan

Ciao Gianni, great to follow your journeys, just bought a new B. hoping to be able to do some trips in Scandinavia. I did not find any tips from yourself on which saddle to use and how to preserve your lower ... after days biking. Also, any tips on bike lighting? grazie mille
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 4 жыл бұрын
Grazie Luigi, molto gentile! As much as the parts affected, saddles are a very personal thing...I love Brooks B17 leather saddles and that is what i have always used in the last 10 years. They do take a month or so to get in shape but to me they are way more comfortable than synthetic or sporty saddles on long rides. When I tour i also wear regular outdoor trousers rather than cycling shorts with padding, as those are hard to keep dry and clean. After a couple of days you do get used to the long time on the saddle. Best advice, once you found a saddle that suits you, is to use the first few days of your tour to increase the length of your cycling. Start gently and build up from that; it will also help with how you adjust to the fitness you need. As for bike lighting i carry small rubber lights that can be wrapped on the handlebar at the front and hanged on my backpack or saddle post at the rear but rarely use them. They are for emergency if there is fog or i am caught when it gets a little dark and i have no option to stop there and then. Ciao!

Hi...If you want to tour on a folding bike, the Bike Friday would be a better option. Also, why not use a carbiner to attach your backpack to the metal frame of the Brooks saddle...much simpler. Also, you should substitute these handlebars shown for the butterfly bars that Brompton offer as an option....this will be much more comfortable on long rides and the variable hand positions it offers will help prevent the pins and needles feeling in your arm and hands. Also, just wondering if you suffer from broken spokes...especially on the back wheel?..as the Brompton is not designed to carry heavy loads on the back.
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 4 жыл бұрын
Suneel, to each his own. Brompton are fantastic touring bikes and are used by more and more people for touring. I know Bike Friday are also good but one advantage of the Brompton is that it folds smaller. I am used to the bar but I know carabiner can also be a solution. Straps seat more naturally on the bar as they would on your shoulder. One day I will give carabiners a try and see how that goes. I don't like those butterfly bars and that is why I use Ergon grips to give me extra hands positions on the bike. I never had a broken spoke even on rough roads in Patagonia and the Himalayas.

Mahesh V thanks! Yes I normally use schwalbe Marathon plus and find them the best for Brompton. Weight of luggage shared between T Bag and backpack is around 20 kg. Front T Bag can hold up to 10kg according to specification. Also consider your weight to figure out how much you can load the bike. I weight around 75 Kg and carry about 20 Kg of luggage with me when I travel with the bike. Thanks

Hello from Switzerland. After my first ride from Lyon to Avignon (Via Rhone) without a rack, I travelled now the Velodysee (EV1) from Bordeaux via Roscoff to Brest (1.000 km). Now, with my rack, I used you hack for the backpack and the idea with the stick. I used a wooden stick and made some nuts in it, to fit better on my Brooks saddle. Thank you very much for this idea. It works perfect. By the way: What and how do you do maintenance during travelling? We had a lot of sandy and dusty tracks for bikes and the bike looks horrible full with dust every day, but I could‘n wash it every day. Which parts do you clean regularly and how often do you do this and which parts need new grease or oil and of often do you do that?
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler Жыл бұрын
My longest travels on a Brompton have been a month long and I only took some reasonable care of keeping the chain tidy and lubricated every week or so. If you get it really dirty it is sometime worth stopping by a bike shop ( if you find any... ) and just say you are traveling and ask if they would mine cleaning the chain. It isn't always easy when touring to carry messy rags and degreasers that can help the task. Next I just keep lubricated parts like brake callipers, the bolts of the fold mechanism and if it gets messy disassemble the rear shifter and give that a thorough clean. They are tough bikes!

Hi I have a an M6 Brompton with the standard wide range 3 speed hub. I fitted a 39T chainring to help with climbing hills for touring. You mentioned early in the video a 12% reduction option is that in the hub? If so which hub is it? Thanks for an excellent video :)
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, not in the hub gear but in the chainring and as you have changed already to a 39T crankset you have what Brompton refers to as a 'reduced' gear option. Mine has 44T which I think is actually advertised by Brompton as reducing ratios by -18% rather than the 12 I mentioned. Many thanks!

@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I am posting a video in the next few days on the backpack as I often receive this question and there are other things to consider. To answer you the one I use is a 45L which I find suits me for trips up to a month. I have seen others carrying larger one or smaller ones though; depending on how much stuff you want to carry anything from 40L up is fine. Too small and you risk having to stretch the straps too much for it to seat on the rear rack, putting too much strain on the straps but mostly bringing too much swinging and movement as you ride.

@@BromptonTraveler thanks I also had a question why bring the extra tire when even when puntured isn't the inner tube that needs replacing? You can have a hole in the tire and if the inner tube ok, you should be fine right? I personally don't want to be carrying around another tire when touring. What are your thoughts of why u bring it?
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler Жыл бұрын
It depends how long you go for and where you go. If you go for more than 1000 kilometres on badly surfaced roads there is a chance that your tyre will wear out and you start getting too many puncture. That is when it is good to have a spare, just in case. If you leave with new or good conditions tire you probably never need it but if you do and are in most countries in the world, you will not find a good spare tire for Brompton small wheels.

I have heard of people managing to carry on a Brompton without much of a bag around it... Ikea bag is still a little large for cabin. Either ways it is a little risky because if you can't, then you might have to rush and try to pack it badly which doesn't help protecting it. I never risked it myself.

It was one of the three feet of the base! All you need is something that is 5-10cm wider on each side than the shoulder straps of the back you use. I would say something around 30-35 cm should work...Mine is 32cm. If you want a lighter weight and don't mind spending the money you can get some carbon fibre bars online which are really light and resistant. I use one of those at the base of the back pack to pull it away from my shoes.

Would you say 6-speed is obligatory for touring in general? I wonder if the 2 speed version with the derailleur can be enough. From my trekking bike I know that a lot of times you can have plenty of gears but only few of them are actually usable, since they are often either so easy or so hard that using them barely makes sense. When the space betwen 1st and 2nd gear is good I think 2 speeds may be enough.
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 5 жыл бұрын
Max Meier Hi Max thanks for the question. Everything is possible provided you don’t mind the limitations. I heard of people touring the world on fixies with only one speed! I would say 6 reduced gears on a Brompton is the sweet spot for me. These will meet most conditions that you are likely to encounter. Those times when they are not enough it means you might have to walk which personally I enjoy and don’t mind. 2 gears only will mean that you will be more likely to not feel comfortable. Also remember you are carrying weight of your luggage. Hope this helps.

As always excellent information Gianni - thank you. Couple of questions: 1. What length is your ‘bar’ under the seat that you attach your backpack to? 2. I noticed the bar was sticking out of the Dimpa Bag when you packed it up (& you twisted your seat sideways?) - do you remove this bar when packing for plane travel? Or just leave it on & remove the seat? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give on the above. Cheers.

Thanks Joshua. Bar length is around 35cm. What I show in this video is how quick it is to pack the bike for a transfer on some kind of transport during your tour. Let's say you take a train to skip a part you don't want to ride or so...That is why I don't bother removing the saddle and the bar. When I pack the bike for a tour I am much more careful to protect the bike. I suggest you see this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGnNlJ-vm92GeMk as I go into details on how I pack the bike ready for the plane. Cheers.

@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jorge. It is hard to say for sure as it depends on how reliable the bike is? If you have had the bike for a while and you can trust it maybe you can start with a shorter tour to find out how it performs? Doing that you can also learn what are the vulnerable parts and bring some spare parts with you and learn how to fix it. It is possible to tour with any bicycle. People have toured the world on old rickety bikes! :)

How do you keep your rucksack clean? The Brompton rear wheel will throw up a lot of crap onto the straps and bottom of the rucksack especially if you are riding muddy tracks, dirty roads. I don't have a rack on mine so use a seat post rack low down with smalll panniers. I guess you must really want to carry a rucksack maybe for hiking? The weight seems pretty high up on your bike and right at the back. I have an original front touring pannier with all metal frame, no plastic, it's great as you say.

Alex I always have a mudguard on the wheel so it is not that bad even on muddy roads and wet days. I always cover the backpack with a rain cover mostly to keep it clean but also to keep it dry. Rucksack is very versatile. Can be used for hiking although I haven't done any on my trips but it is easy to carry each time you need to carry the bike or move it on buses or train. The rucksack at the back looks pretty full but I try to keep it lighter than the T-Bag at the front. It mostly contains bulky things like sleeping bag, clothes, dimpa bag and the tools at the bottom.

Gianni Filippini I walk a lot! Believe me, walking is something I’m not embarrassed to do. But walking at 2.7mph is harder after awhile than 2.7mph spinning a low gear. This makes the top end pretty low on the downs and tailwind flats but you can’t win them all I guess.

@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 5 жыл бұрын
I use a 45L backpack and I would say depending on how full it is around 70-80cm. It depends on your height but you need a backpack that according to your saddle height enables you to put the straps around and leans on the rack of your Brompton. A small backpack might not reach all the way down. A taller backpack is alright as it simply sticks out behind your saddle with doesn't matter that much.

HI Damian, I know Brompton are pretty expensive bikes. I owned a Dahon in the past and wasn't happy with reliability but this was a decade ago and I am sure they have improved things but I am no expert in recommending a model for you. Another thing worth considering is the fact that unlike Brompton, Dahon and Tern and most other folding bikes are not as compact when folded which takes away the main reason why one should use them for touring instead of going for a regular, larger bike. Another option for you to consider is having a look if any 2nd hand Brompton bike is on for sale. While they do keep a good re-sell value, that would save you quite a bit on price. Otherwise have a look at Tern or Dahon bearing in mind how small they fold and see what works better for you. Cheers

U got a Leather saddle, how is it about maintenance on the Road? Leather fat, wax etc ? …
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
With Brooks saddle they do recommend to use Proofide wax but to be honest I have never done anything to the B17 I have and after 7 years on my first bike it was still in excellent conditions. When you tour you are sitting on the bike all day and if it rains, which is the main concern with leather, you are either sitting on it or taking cover. At night a Brompton allows you to have the bike covered by the tent flysheet ( with most tents...) and that greatly helps the saddle to stay dry.

@@BromptonTraveler of all your trips with airlines, which are more cost-friendlier than others? Do most airlines allow Folding Bikes as regular check-in luggage or you had to opt for "Sports Equipment"?
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 3 жыл бұрын
@@Matt-px2ev It is hard to give a definite answer as airlines do change their policies and at times it also depends simply on who you find at the check-in desk! With a Brompton I have never had to pay anything extra as nobody knows I carry a bike in the bag. I was only once asked as the bag does look slightly bigger than a normal suitcase. I said I was going climbing and had boots and ropes and that was enough for them to be happy. As a rule of thumb you won't pay anything extra for long haul as they normally include at least 23Kg in your luggage allowance. My bike bag usually weighs around 21 to 23kg. On low cost airlines it is trickier as they do try to get money out of your luggage weight... I find Easyjet in Europe is the most upfront and clear in their guidelines. Ryanair is at the opposite spectrum and they normally do try to get any pound or euros that you didn't pay on your ticket! :)

I've tried a backpack on the rack, but I prefer to use a rack bag with a 45L dry sack bungee corded on top fixed to the rack instead. I find it more stable as the centre of gravity is lower. Just personal preference. A trekking pole is useful to wedge under the saddle as a stand, whilst also doubling as a tent pole as well as for if you do any trekking. I got the idea of using a trekking pole as a stand from Heinz Stücke, the chap noted for setting the world record for bicycle touring in 1995. In a global journey spanning more than 50 years,. I think he's retired now due to age, but he finished up touring by Brompton. He used a backpack rested on the rack in his touring set up. facebook.com/heinzstucke/?ref=br_rs

Thanks so much for sharing. If you have a link with a picture it would be nice to see. I met Heinz Stucke in London once. Amazing guy!

@@BromptonTraveler I don't have a link, but I use the T bag and Bromptom's rack bag, the lightweight dry sack, like a sausage, on top with a couple of bungees down to hook on the rack and the wrap and clip together lid looped around the saddle post so I can't lose it. My sleeping bag in a bivvy bag and shelter (tarp) goes in the dry sack, plus clothes in a plastic bag to ensure they stay dry. I also put eazee wheels on the rack as I use the bike as a shopping trolley, as folded up apart from the handlebars, with either the T bag left attached or the rack bag detached from the rack, turned 180° around to rest and strapped to the main tube, then they will work as a basket. This also means I don't need to touch a trolley or basket at the supermarket, in these times of pandemic. I also have the IKEA bag as I've had bus drivers say the bike must be in a bag in the past.
