Video documenting the installation of a Trail Tech Vapor dash on a 2014 Suzuki DR-Z400SM. This installation should be pretty generic to any DRZ model though, and I've made notes where things are SM specific.
Trail Tech Vapor Model 752-301 (radiator screw instead of sensor that requires cutting into the hose)
Trail Tech Bracket 022-OEB

I'm still around 200 miles on mine, still get the issue where the speedometer is either perfect or 1/3 of actual speed. Haven't figured it out yet. I noticed you said it turns on when you turn the key. If installed properly, it actually shouldn't turn on with the key I believe, but instead should be connected to the constant 12v line. the screen will turn off when unused and will auto turn on when it gets data (like rpm or wheel speed).

The socket you started talking about at 3:20 to run the power to- did you just cut that off the original speedo?

Hey man I’m finally getting around to doing the entire install right now. I’m throwing the trail tech on one of those motodash2s from drzrider. I have the ‘17 version of the sm. What did you set the parameters for the wheel size to get the speedometer? Oh and one other thing. The old speedometer cable- did you just tape it up and just leave it in there? Let me know if that last question doesn’t make sense. Thank you so much for doing the walk through. It has been fairly easy thanks to you.
@JohnPaulCraig

I used 1884mm as the wheel size. Its been decently accurate when it actually is. I've had some issues where at times it shows about 1/3 the speed im actually going, but i think it's either sensor placement or strength of the magnet or something, but when its in the right range, it seems to be accurate using that value. As for the old cable, i removed it all completely then duct taped the old hole by the axle because i need the sensor housing as a spacer. If i find a nicer solution i'll swap it out, but for now it works fine.

awesome vid!! I'm leaning towards the trail tech vapor for my drz after mine stopped working completely still turns on but speedo and odo stopped and reset to 0.. Hows it holding up so far? also last question can you add The miles you thought you had LOL?
@JohnPaulCraig
@JohnPaulCraig 5 жыл бұрын
Holding up fine. My only gripe is the speedo sometimes registers perfect, and sometimes it's like 1/3 speed. It's strange. I've fiddled with the magnet but no real change. But it's better than not at all. Most of the time it's right. You can set the odometer, but since it's not "official" that you can, I didn't mention how. You should be able to Google it pretty easily though. I set mine to what my previous odometer was.

@JohnPaulCraig

I had issues where the speed displayed would sometimes be too low, like 16mph when I was doing about 40, but then it'd go back to normal once I stopped. A little annoying but not major. Otherwise it was good.

This was a great tutorial, but had a quick question, for the blinker/neutral light/high beam light did you just get rid of it? Im tryna to find a way to keep my stock blinker light with the new trail tech.

Devin the dude , if you're talking about the stock dash, first check the back of the unit...the speedometer cable tends to fall off a lot. sometimes it's as easy as plugging it back in.

Rizky_Buizness I left it as a spacer for now. I took the cable out of it and just taped over the hole until I find a legit spacer, but I'm in no hurry.

I have a dr200 which is air cooled. How does that work out?
@JohnPaulCraig
@JohnPaulCraig 6 жыл бұрын
You won't need the coolant temp guage of course, but the speedo and tach are pretty universal, so as long as you have a currently powered guage cluster that you can use the power wires from, it should work out. The Trailtechs are pretty generic overall.

What was wrong with the original clocks??
@JohnPaulCraig
@JohnPaulCraig 6 жыл бұрын
My speedo cable kept coming loose, then after I changed my front wheel, it stopped working completely. It runs on a cheap plastic gear. Plus it has no tach. Trailtech gives more info and somewhat more reliably.

This is a relatively old video but, are you able to add a gas gauge?
@JohnPaulCraig
@JohnPaulCraig 3 жыл бұрын
It may be possible, but i'm not aware of any. I think for most bikes the gas guage is integrated with the fuel pump, so i'm not sure how it'd be done.

Hello, what is the reference of the screw sensor on the trail tech site? Thanks for the video
@JohnPaulCraig
@JohnPaulCraig 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but i think you're referring to the radiator/coolant temperature sensor. There are two styles, one requires cutting into the radiator hose, and the other is simply a screw that goes in the top of the radiator. The kit that comes with the screw is part number 752-301. The link for JUST the temperature sensor is here: www.trailtech.net/digital-gauges/digital-gauges-replacement-parts/temperature-sensor/v300-001

RayStick 1.0 you don't. You just leave the fuel selector on "on" and if it dies, you switch to reserve and get to a gas station.

How do you calibrate the speedo to your wheelsize?
@JohnPaulCraig
@JohnPaulCraig 8 жыл бұрын
STiCKxaH you enter the diagnostic mode and one of the options is wheel size, meaning outer circumference of the wheel (in millimeters). one easy way is to mark on cement when the valve stem is directly at the bottom, then push the bike until the front wheel made 1 revolution and the valve stem is at the bottom again and mark that spot, then measure the distance between them.

John-Paul Craig I hear you man. When I did my jd jet kit I spun it in place and didn’t have to remove the whole thing. That made things a lot easier. Thank you for your video btw. I got the 752-700 vapor for my 2017 400sm and it came with the radiator hose insert. After watching your video, I ordered the screw from trail tech. I believe it’s compatible. Your video will save me a lot of hassle. Did you ever put the tach on the spark plug?
