Bhante I wish to make a donation for the caring of the monks and all the rescue animals. Just want to make sure the temple receives this. Appreciate listening to your dhamma talks. Much merit to you all.

Donations can be made using this website www.hillsidehermitage.org/support-us/ You can write something @paypal, for example that you want to include the support of the animals in your donation. Or whether you would like to give the donations on behalf of departed family members for example. A short email from Hillside will follow in response. The donations are definitely received, at least in my case, it has been. Sadhu Anumodana for your generosity in order to support the Buddha Sasana.

28:45 Good point. Finns have this saying "tieto lisää tuskaa", which means "knowledge adds to suffering". And many people think so, that if you think about "philosophy" or eastern doctrines, it will just cause unnecessary suffering. It's the total opposite of Buddha's teaching, or maybe just a mixing of words, for vain and misguided "philosophizing" will surely cause suffering.
@MaikeruT

No, it makes you cognizant of your suffering. Suffering exists whether you distract yourself from it or not.

@@edgepixel8467 that makes sense on an intellectual level, but I think the question is still valid. Have you not experienced two conflicting emotions at the same time? Pain and pleasure (athletic training), sadness and relief (breakup with a toxic person) anger and remorse (argument with a loved one), etc.
@richardmccabe2392
@richardmccabe2392 Жыл бұрын
@@AnnHelle again, in those situations where you experience opposing emotions, the pleasant ones are not a part of suffering whilst the unpleasant ones are. If you genuinely, at least partially get relief from a breakup, that's not the suffering. The suffering itself comes from the unpleasant side of a breakup. Meditation teaches us to detach ourselves from all emotions.

I have a question on a video you made on composure and jhanas. You stated: Stop exercising behavior that's already bound with the content of the senses. Then the general nature of the hindrance becomes revealed. How would you know what behavior is bound with the content of the senses? I have the idea of completely restraining from doing anything and seeing what there would be a resistance to not doing. I also see another way that would be restraining from doing anything out of craving, ill-will, and delusion.

Bhante, thank you for your explanations. The excerpt mentionned in the talk describes the process as being: examine meaning -> reflective acceptance -> zeal -> will -> scrutinise -> strives, etc; which looks like an endless cycle that reinforces itself overtime. Does it mean that whenever I don’t feel motivation or enough willpower to observe self-restraint, the solution is to read back the suttas again and again and again until willpower becomes strong enough against the pull of sensuality? I’m confused because I had the impression that self-restraint was a prerequisite for understanding, but this sutta seems to be saying the reverse. Basically my question is, why do some people have a strong will in the face of sensuality while others easily give in? Why is my willpower strong today but weak the next day? am I responsible for this, or is it about as controllable as my mood and thoughts are? This seems to be the main stumbling block in my practice at the moment. Thank you in advance Bhante for your corrections.

@HillsideHermitage 3 жыл бұрын
-The solution is to restrain yourself, by any means necessary (if reading the Suttas will aid that, then by all means). -Self-restraint is pre-requisite for understanding, but the fact that you value sense restraint means there is some understanding there already. -No one starts with strong will power in the face of sensuality. Willpower requires development. And you will develop it by not acting towards sensuality regardless of what mood you are in.

🙏 Thankyou venerables. What is the fastest way to see if one has noble right view? Would it be understanding the 4 noble truths along with Anatta? The way I understand Anatta (intellectually anyway) is that I only exist conditionally. *Also, can one be sotapanna / sakadagami without being free from sensuality? It would be great to have some clarity here

Yes, Sensuality is a fetter abandoned at anagami level. Sotapanna and sakadagami still have it. Understanding the nature of dukkha and freedom from it is the fastest way.

I have heard/read quite a number of conflicting views on how understanding of the Four noble truths is achieved. Is it a gradual process (through acquiring Right View and becoming Sotapanna and then continuing from there) or does it 'happen' in an instant? What sense do the different levels of understanding then make? Or am I missing the point completely here?

It's a journey with four clear destinations. To the extent you have done the work, the clearer your destination will be. The speed of arrival , the type of destination all depends on how much work have you completed or in simple terms how much do you actually know. Some take a life time while some takes just minutes. Its all about the right view and where you are in respect to that. Hope this helps.

Buddhism is a gradual teaching. Just note your emotions every day, that will take you directly where you need to go. You don't have to do anything radical, you just need to note what you experience.
