It's one Kata I feel I am too stiff on. Great demonstration of how to relax then generate power when needed. Okinawans have so much detail in katas we don't really see in the west. Thanks Len

Wonderful!! I have seen Shinzato Sensei several times on video and, as a Shotokan practitioner, I instantly recognised something different about his approach that appealed me, namely the absence of tension. I watched him one time was at an Okinawan karate seminar at the big Budokan dojo, and another time was at a small dojo (possibly his home). Just as with this video, he was trying to explain & demonstrate Relaxed Effectiveness. It is of course very difficult to understand precisely what his emphasis was and how he obtained his effectiveness. But I think this video helped a great deal. May I ask how Shinzato Sensei has influenced your karate-do?

I love Sensei’s approach to teaching karate and life. He is not there to convince anyone to change their style, but instead, he makes you think what your body is capable of. He always evolve with his karate instead of just sticking to one thing that might not help with his karate approach. I love his open-mindedness.

Great to see Sensei Shinzato has impacted your karate as well. He is an excellent Sensei and is my Sensei. What is your original style of Karate, just to understand the influence of your kata. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Pat, I originally started out with Matsubayashi in 1993 and has evolved throughout the years. I met sensei Shinzato in 2005 and he has given me many things to think about. If I am not mistaken, do you train at Omine dojo in CA? If so, I was there in 2006 and met sensei Susan Budge. Thank you for watching my video, and hopefully, one day, we shall meet.

Oh good to hear! Yes I run Omine Dojo now. Unfortunately, we lost our beautiful warrior Sensei Susan a few years ago... I train with Sensei Shinzato every year when I go back home to Okinawa. Hope to cross paths with you some time! Great to see another Kishaba Juku practitioner.

Sensei, if I am not mistaken, it was Sensei Shinzato who translated the well known book "Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do" by O Sensei Nagamine....is it right?

SO THE QUESTION IS THIS: Lets see a person gear up with sparring equipment and go full contact against someone using their kata. ...The kata will not work.

I have faced this karate person for a sparring once. He only had to punch me twice. One in my face and 2nd to the groin. When I tired to block his 1st his 2nd was already hitting my groin. Well, he actually did not hit the targets but stopped right before. In this video he does not show any speed but he is actually lightning fast. His punches were like a whip and sounded like a whip. Later when I checked my groin, there was a penny size bruise. He was able to control his punch just to leave a bruise mark on my skin while not leaving any pain. That is how accurate his attacks are and this happens in a split second. Okinawa karate people train to attack direct onto the vital points efficiently. So sparring gears aren't really necessary for their training. If you think kata will not work because you never met any one who knows how to practice kata. I know most don't. Kata is not a fighting drill. It does not work as is. It does not work as it looks.
