I love how this trilogy is not scared of making sacrifices like that. First, Hiccup's leg, then his dad and lastly, Toothless. It's realistic that's probably why it really resonates with the audience.

I wouldn't say the last one was realistic, but other than that, yeah. Other than, maybe, the idea of losing your friends to a toxic girlfriend. :'''D Sorry, just was passing by and got triggered by your comment saying that the last one was a good decision. Although, if you think about that, making stupid decisions while being in sleep deprivation state for half a week at least (and up to several years from inheriting the chief post) is actually quite realistic. The villain did have a backstory, however, it wasn't explained in the movie. He only mentioned that killing dragons made him a hero in his village, so he decided to kill as many as he could. So he's not just evil, he was probably consumed with his thirst for praise; he wanted to become the hero. Also, he's very passionate about hunting, so the hunt to kill dragons became his life.
@pipedream2556 Жыл бұрын
Not to mention that tidbit about his backstory I'd enough to make it apparent that he's meant to be a direct foil for Hiccup - if our protagonist had gone through with killing Toothless like anyone else would have, he could well have wound up in this exact position when that act earned him praise at long last. We don't need Grimmel to be a dully fleshed out character with flashback showing exactly how he got to this point because he's designed to be a narrative tool to contrast Hiccups eventual sacrifice

I saw the first HTTYD in theaters shortly after I turned 7. Walking out, I told my parents that they HAD to make a sequel. My dad argued that there was nothing left in his story so there probably wouldn't be one. I saw the second HTTYD in theaters a few months after I turned 11. I walked out, smug smile on my face as my dad finally accepted that I had called the sequel as a 7 year old. "But don't expect a third one, there's actually no where else to go now, he's grown up." he said as I rambled on about where the story could go from there. I saw the third HTTYD in theaters for my 16th birthday. I walked out of the theaters crying and I turned to my dad, "That one. That was the end of the story." He agreed.

Drago and Grimmel both function as dark reflections of the kind of person Hiccup could have become, had he taken a similar path. When he had Toothless at his mercy and was about to kill him, it was like three main paths opened up before him: *A)* Kill this rare dragon, become a hero to my village which has warred with dragons for generations, and dedicate myself to being the greatest dragon hunter the world has ever known until not one of these beasts remains. *B)* Learn to tame this rare dragon by making it submissive to my will, weaponize its power for my own personal gain and use what I've learned to build an army of dragons to command, ultimately dominating the world with them. *C)* Free this rare dragon, learn more about it, earn its trust and loyalty by befriending & protecting it, risk my life to show my dragon hating village that they don't have to fight them, and dedicate myself to protecting dragons even when it means fighting other humans, losing my father and eventually having to let go of my closest friend so he can truly live free. Hiccup definitely chose the most difficult, heartbreaking path but it proved to be the best one. Moreover, Toothless is so smart that he'll no doubt use what he learned from Hiccup to better teach & protect his fellow dragons as their Alpha.
