I have some transferred movies done in a similar manner using a camcorder with a slightly different setup. The camcorder was set farther back, thus eliminating much of the projector noise, and the original films owners present. They provided a running commentary on each clip giving much more information than what could be gleaned from the film and its handwritten notations. Very reminiscent of what occurred when we watched the films as youngsters. They added specific locations such as whose house it was and what street it was on; they named everyone in the film (a task that could not be accomplished otherwise) and pointed out things that would've passed by unnoticed, e.g. 'that must be cousin so-and-so in the hat' or 'that was before they remodeled the storefront'. In one clip, it was pointed out that my mother was about 6 months pregnant (which I would not have noticed) with me! So, in addition to preserving the films, I now have long gone relatives providing the details of the film. They are both informative and very often extremely comical - 'Oh! Look at what I was wearing! What was I thinking!' What was sacrificed in quality was more than compensated for by the specifics obtained.

Brian Smith, Can the film scanner to digitize the film into computer. It spend more time to scan each film. Then the Final Cut Pro be used to edit the films!

Thank you for letting us know about the projection speed has to be at 20 frames per second to prevent flicker not the standard 18 frames per second. I didn't know that and not many do-it-yourself KZbin videos don't mention that. I'm lucky because I just found a standard 8mm projector with variable speed and it was more expensive than a non-variable speed projector.

Just to clarify something, he's made it sound like the addition of the box with the mirror has needlessly complicated matters. The box with the mirror actually solves one major problem BUT all the things he says from there on, ( like you have to watch it continuously, if you bump the camcorder you are screwed, your camcorder will pick up the sound of the projector, and so on...) these are all true regardless of whether you use the box and mirror method or point the sett up at a wall (his method). It is a time intensive process. The box and mirror only serve to eliminate one problem, the key-stoning. Nothing more. And what he goes on to say about the film jaming or breaking is true of nearly 100% of the projectors out there. Most every projector that is marked "Auto threading" is liable to be a problem because nobody has new 8mm films. They are usually between 30 and 60 years old. If you are looking for a used projector, look for the simplest and shortest film path through the gate, preferable open so you can see the film moving.

Hello! Great question! If you need to edit your film, which most people do, we highly recommend editing on your computer vs getting out your scissors and splicing tape! Sure you might transfer some unwanted footage, but the headache of buying an old school crank editor, tape and more importantly the time involved is not worth it vs just editing on your computer. We have made an excellent Video Editing Series on how to edit using Adobe Premiere Elements. Link is below. Be sure to give us a call and we can help you get your project started today! gotmemories.com/edit-home-movies/

EthaN yes you can, but the quality of transfer doesn’t compare to using our equipment, plus, average cost of a transfer is $175.
