Oh my... what a joy. It's like a snapshot of my childhood fantasies. I grew up with a Mirror from the age of 7 - Sail no,17742 and had dreams of sailing the oceans in her (very Swallow and Amazons) - well, she did seem a lot bigger to me as a 7 year old. Still so many fond memories of all those Mirror Class Association Rallies throughout the 70's. I think anyone who's ever had one will always be in love with them. What a brilliantly crazy thing to do with one though... it was just begging to be done wasn't it.

The incredible Mirror dingy further showing it's versatility! The Mirror was my first sailboat and built with my Dad and brother more than 40 years ago. So many fond memories which brings a tear to one's eye....

Hi; You have a very good sense of line, volume & proportion with this re-fit. It could have been horribly botched on a little boat like this...but your cabin "looks like it grew there!" In other words very nice, very professional. Probably you have loved boats for quite a long time.

Excellent job. I liked the detail in the rudder that you put the little boarding step into it. That was thoughtful. But better still is that you actually tested her capsize behaviour before putting to sea. I presume you tested the re-boarding from the water as well during these tests. I write this really for be benefit of anyone else being inspired to build a project like this as these small details make the differemce. Would love to see some video of her sailing and your adventures in her as the fun you have with a boat in inversely proportional to her size. Tiny like this must be immense fun.

what a superb job you have made of this Mirror dinghy! the original, easy home build, from the 1960's, sponsored by the "Daily Mirror " UK Newspaper, hence the name, and designed, I think, by Barry Bucknell for the new method of "stich and glue" construction, at home, in doors, (in the living room?), if you did not have a garage, (not many did then). The Mirror dinghy sailed better than many expected, was a huge success, and I feel sure that you have added to it's appeal by your excellent ideas, perfectly carried out and looking so good. The cutter rig with the bowsprit suits the boat, I think, and I wish you many happy days sailing and sleeping on board! Very well done, Sir. The "B" man, (bikes, boards, boats and boobs).

Juan

As a fellow Mirror Dinghy owner, this build looks top-heavy and somewhat dangerous. Best of luck in sailing it in heavy wind.

Mountain Gal that cabin is much lighter than it looks, and not dangerous at all. Much more risky sailing an open boat.

A fabulous build project. Not ideal for sailing empty with your weight so far back, but should be fine when you're carrying lots of stuff in the cabin.

Very good job, and interresting video ! I have a question : what is the use of a cabin on so small boat? Is it to sleep inside the boat, or just sit sheltered when it rains? Thanks, Fred
@felixcat93184 жыл бұрын
It is possible to sleep inside, likewise to shelter from the rain. The cabin will add to the buoyancy too, and will keep clothing, sleeping bags and everything else relatively dry.

I know nothing about sailing, but this seems to be rather like converting a Reliant Robin into a campervan, why?
@felixcat93184 жыл бұрын
Actually, there is an excellent conversion of a Reliant into a campervan, available to view on the Internet. Having a cabin makes overnight camping and having somewhere relatively dry quite a nice experience. Likewise, storing gear is easier, and the boat has more buoyancy with the cabin.
