Makes handy cordage. I've heard this called a withee. I have made it mostly from hazel, but also had success with young maple. I have been able to work through stiff parts where an offshoot branch comes out by using a smooth rock or a stick. I'll put the piece I'm working on a platform of flat wood or stone and gently tap the bark to break it loose from the inner fibers. This should be a common topic on bushcraft and survival channels, but nobody talks about it. Thanks for sharing it, Felix!

This one addresses a very serious need for bushcrafters, and the information is both simple, yet very valuable. Our stone age ancestors made the job of twisting plant fibre into cordage quicker & easier with a simple tool. You make a wood or bone handle with 1 to 4 holes drilled in it. Push your material through the holes and twist as you feed It through. The increased leverage easily breaks apart tough fibres and the multi holed version can automatically twist strands together.
