Wait wait wait wait wait, the vocabulary cards are words from their books. I ALREADY DO THAT. I love this curriculum already. Of course I go through my kids books before hand and make their cards by hand too, wow. I’m liking this.

Yes! Isn't that awesome? It's a combination of words from the book and all of the SAT words that aren't in any of the books, sprinkled in throughout the sets.

I feel like you were talking about me in the intro! I’ve got 2 high school students and 2 middle school students and a kindergartener. We’ve homeschooled all the way but I cannot be involved like I used to since I am needed to help with my husbands business. Plus my older children seem overwhelmed and defeated by all the things I think are required for high school transcripts. I feel like I’ve had a major epiphany about what is really necessary and what is realistically feasible with our situation. I’m very interested in RC. I met someone 5 years ago that did it and I remember marveling at her relaxed attitude about school. I need that so badly!

Wanted to try this curriculum but all my sons dislike math very much and if I told them they will do 2 hrs a day they'd be mad at me. Math isn't as important around here either, I want them knowing all the basics but none are going to major in anything to do with math and they are all going into careers that have to do with writing or ministry.

It's not so much 2 hours a day but just a lesson or even half a lesson if they are struggling. Besides graduation requirements, there are many benefits to being good at math when it comes to thinking quantitatively and as a mental discipline. As a homeschooling mom, I must remember that although it's more fun to focus on their strengths, their weaknesses ultimately hold them back in life. People like what they are good at, and the only way to get good at something is with lots of practice.

You can purchase whatever math books you would like but RC recommends Saxon. You can purchase on their website or elsewhere.

But I just want to say thank you so much for the RC for littles, it is such a great resource and so helpful explaining exactly how to teach little ones with this method. I’m so excited to start all my kids with this curriculum. We’re slowly acquiring the books from the reading list. My son is 8 years old. He really struggles with reading. I'm worried he wouldn't be able to read the math book on his own or the stories without help. Yes, I talk about it in my RC Course for Littles. I think typically by the time they reach The Tale of Jolly Robin, they are really solid to do Saxon Math on their own, maybe even a little before. You could take the summer to laser focus on reading and math facts and still be way ahead when starting 5/4 since it's typically 5th grader/advanced 4th grader book.

I forgot to ask. When should the kids work on the vocab/grammar, during the writing or reading part of their school day? Also, we’re more than half way through “help your child to read in a 100 easy lessons” with my almost 6 year old, do you recommend for us to continue/finish the book or switch to alpha phonics?

I am not Karen, but I have my children use Alphaphonics as their 2nd reading primer to finalize phonetic skills.

It's up to you, I know for some parents just 100 Easy Lessons works fine, but in my experience it doesn't seem like a strong enough phonics program and might mean a lot of spelling issues later down the road. I think the pictures/stories are also a distraction which is why I stopped using Progressive Phonics too. I have seen the best results with Alpha Phonics and currently using it as a spelling program for my older girls that I used 100 Easy Lessons with, vs with my younger ones that I am using Alpha Phonics with, their spelling is already much better than the older girls at that age. That's just been my experience though, I know a of of families really like it and have great results.

@@ourhouse I agree. I think the first lessons are great for auditory discrimination and blending skills, but I feel The Reading Lesson gives a slower and more solid base for reading at a younger age. I absolutely have seen amazing results with Alphaphonics used as a reading program followed by dictation the next day before drilling the next set. Just 5 to 10 words...a couple from each family type of things works amazing wonders for spelling. I enjoy Natural Speller after that for the same reason coupled with Spelling Power beginning in 3rd grade to learn to spell the most used words in English. I use Rod and Staff for about 12 weeks of the year...kiddos do a lesson daily not per week as our focus is learning the skills in the workbooks vs. memorizing the list...hope this all makes sense. I do 12 weeks natural speller to find patterns they could study, 12 weeks in spelling power to find common words they do not know that are used a lot in writing, and then 12 weeks of Rod and Staff workbooks. We love spelling here so this is a fun subject for us so we work daily in it...15 minutes a day does wonders.
