How to Trap Leeches for Fishing

Here's how I made my own traps to catch leeches for walleye fishing!
Finding leeches locally to buy has been a bit tough for me, so I went looking on the internet and I found a great video by Clayton Schick Outdoors on how to make a simple and cheap leech trap, and it worked pretty well. So I wanted to share it with all of you!

I got into some speckles last weekend. When I checked stomach contents to see what they had been feeding on, you guessed it leeches.

Wow that's pretty interesting, I guess it makes sense though. Give this a try to catch some, I think you'd be surprised where you can find leeches. I totally wasn't expecting to find them in this rain run off pond, yet here they are!

Take a burlap sack and in this sack put a brick for weight and a couple packs of liver. Tie the sack closed with a long rope and heave it out into the water. A pond is good for leeches. In the morning retrieve the sack and start pulling out the leeches. They get caught in the webbing of the sack. When pulling in the sack do it fast because they know something is up.. Works like a hot dam. good luck. Alberta.

It would be a dark day in hell before I would pay $25.00 a pound for leeches. A # 1 natural bait; now catch them.

Oh yea I've definately heard that. I just didn't have any, but I did have fish heads :) they worked well enough for me!

What kind of leeches were they?

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe these were ribbon leeches.

You didn’t put holes in it

You don't need to with this method, the small opening on either side of the tinfoil platter is more than enough to let water and leeches in! If you've tried this method and the ends of the platter are touching, just bend them out a little. Even big leeches can fit into small spaces :)
