How to Travel While Waiting for Canadian PR Card in 2022

Canadian PR Card, otherwise known as Permanent Resident Travel Document is a legal proof of status for immigrants in Canada. Canada Permanent residents need this document in order to travel out and back to Canada. In this video, learn how to travel while waiting for Canada PR Card in 2022.
After the IRCC has certified that you have met all requirements for permanent residency, the processing time for the PR Card may take up to about 45 days or more after which you can finally access the document. Renewing your PR Card on the other hand may take up to about 100 days or more.
Your PR Card, whether new or renewed can only be received by you and cannot be sent to a non-Canadian address.
Meanwhile, the Canadian PR card is regarded as a travel document and you are required to have it as proof of permanent residency while returning to Canada from any trip.
Knowing that your PR Card cannot be sent to a non-Canadian address and cannot be received by anyone else on your behalf.
It is best that you wait for your PR Card to be mailed to your location in Canada before you embark on any international travel.
However, if you must travel before the proof of permanent residence is ready, you can do so by applying for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD).
If you travel out of Canada while your PR Card was being processed or renewed or if the one you have expires while you are away from Canada, you can apply for PRTD to return to Canada.

Hello, I am from Afghanistan. I entered Canada by land on March 2, 2023 without a passport and applied for asylum. The court decision was positive on October 31, 2023 and I applied for a PR card. I just received an email saying that I applied. And in this email, it says that my application has been sent and that they will contact me later. By the way, I applied for a travel document and it arrived a week ago. Can I go back and forth to Turkey without any problems with my travel document and court decision? or what do I need to go back and forth without any problems? Thank you.

Hi!! Thanks for ur info!! I am a Canada work permit holder. At the end of July 2023, I applied for PR. I received the PR portal on February 5, 2024, but as of now, I haven't received the COPR. However, I have to leave Canada for two weeks at the end of April. If: I receive the COPR before leaving Canada for Hong Kong but haven't received the actual PR card, and don't have enough time to apply for a PRTD. I receive the COPR/PR confirmation while in Hong Kong. In both of these scenarios, how should I re-enter Canada? Thank you

*Not 100% certain if this really answered my wives situation. She came to Canada on a visitors visa from Thailand that was valid for the length of her passport which is 2026, also we were informed she must leave Canada in 6 months but being a multi-entry visa we thought nothing of it. The issue we are wondering about today. When she arrived in April 2022, we started the PR Card Application along with the work permit and visa extension which arrived about 1 month ago. While we understand the PR Card could take along time to come, Can she travel back to Thailand and still return on her Visitors Visa? Thanks for any help. Plus I'm sorry for those of you that commented that it's taking forever to receive there PR Card. I am surprised you didn't know that it would be a LONG Process when you applied. I was informed it could be a year before we see it. I'm guessing the Government is busy processing all the Ukrainian folks coming into Canada. Only guessing.*
