Hi Lauren! I'm from Portugal and I'm 48. I always wanted to learn to play and I even bought a guitar 30 years ago but I never really had the time or patience to learn so I gave up. Two years ago I had some health issues and I had to stop working. I decided to start learning to play because it's good for the memory and so I bought a new guitar, some books to learn some theory and of course I watch YT videos. I must say you are my favourite and in a year I learned to play some songs, strumming and fingerstyle quiet well and I love it! So thank you for that and I will continue to follow your lessons because it really became an addiction 😁❤ 11:16

Very good demo. I've been doing a simplified Travis picking pattern, but you've just shown me the fuller pattern that I've been hearing by pros like John Denver and Lindsey Buckingham. That more complex pattern adds sparkle and beauty to every chord. Super job. I've got lots of practice to do now. Thanks.

Great lesson! Thank you. Can I ask why U use middle finger . Wouldn’t It be easier to use both with index finger . Or is it better to get it in my muscle memory as in this video for later patterns?
@davidsals80205 ай бұрын
When you are first learning and playing slowly that might appear to make sense, but it’s easier to go quickly and not mess up when you have one finger assigned to each string. For more complex patterns the ring finger picks up the high e string too.

Queston: On the D chord, you use the open 4th string (D) and the 3rd string, 3rd fret (A) as the bass notes. Why not use the open 5th string (A)? So you would be consistent with the bass strings used. I have been finger picking a long time and I am attempting to learn the Travis method.

Is it always 7 Beat's per chord? And who is your favourite TMNT? Mine is Leonardo

It's technically 4 beats per chord, but 7 individual notes played. But the pattern sometimes changes. Michaelangelo was my favorite.

This particular pattern was called "Cotton pickin," as it was used originally by Elizabeth Cotton. She was left handed but learned to play on a right hand guitar, so she played guitar with the bass strings at the bottom. You can hear her on KZbin doing "Freight Train." Just a little bit of history for whiney purists.

Thank you so much for this comment. I’m still new to playing. Today I did a deep dive on Elizabeth Cotton and you are absolutely right. Her picking is insanely good. Born in the 1890s and started playing as a little girl on her brothers guitar. She bought her first guitar at 11yo. Played until the day she died and inspired a whole generation of amazing musicians. Thanks again. I would’ve never known. ❤

Blackbird is not a Travis picked song. I know this is the way that most play it, but that is not correct. Watch Paul McCartney play it. He using his index finger in a strumming pattern
@JamesWilliams-rw5jo7 ай бұрын
I think you're missing the point. She's just trying to show a picking pattern to dress up your playing wherever you want to use it. Weather blackbird is 100 percent by the book or not doesn't matter

Yes, but you could use it and most people wouldn't know the difference. Ask me how I now. 😉

@RC-Flight7 ай бұрын
She never said Paul played it Travis style. Paul used a unique and individual way of sweeping his finger across the strings, but most others including myself use a Travis picking style to play black bird. Despite being left handed myself, I’m not Paul McCartney and therefore don’t strum or pick like him.
