The eyes are the window to the soul but it’s no secret that the eye area is often the first to show signs of ageing. With lots of very active facial muscles, the dynamic but delicate eye area makes fine lines and wrinkles a top concern for many of us.
In today's video, I share my expert tips to treat, prevent and reduce lines and wrinkles around the eye area. If you feel that wrinkles around your eyes are bothering you, the simple approach of combining skincare with lifestyle changes can make a significant difference.

I'm okay with subtle expression lines unless they are too distracting. So this was an interesting video because I think it's worthwhile to try and prevent harsh lines and wrinkles. Thanks Dr. Sam :)

That's exactly what I've been looking for. I am 24 and I'm starting to notice that natural folds around my eye area are starting to get deeper and bigger. Information on how to build a routine for eye area would be very helpful. I would love to hear your product recommendations as well.

Optometrists recommend that you do not use retin-a around the eyes because it dries out your eye’s oil glands. I was wondering why my eyes were ALWAYS red even though I’m young and healthy, slept enough, did eye exercises etc. the actual skin around my eyes could handle a little tret just fine, but I was totally drying out my Meibomian glands. Once I started protecting that area with cerave healing ointment every night and keeping the tret away from that part of my face, the redness, stinging and dryness in my eyes was significant reduced. Please look into this- applying retinol to your orbital area is unsafe and potentially very deleterious to your eye health.

Use a retinoid formulated for the eye area. They’re much weaker but still affective over time.

I'm turning 31 in 2 month's and for the last year maybe two I really started noticing my eyes being drier and seeing one more line that is not disappearing so much. First I used Vaseline at night and peptide cream, but now I bought a retinol eye cream from lrp and the night treatment cream from estee lauder and a thick eye cream (I know it's much) and I try putting my vitamin c serum under the eyes. I hope this will help. And diet of course.

Good that works for you, but everyone be careful with tret around the eyes! Many people are sensitive and get dry eye, because tret may inhibit the glands that lubricate the eyes. Sometimes this is an irreversible side effect. I'd rather be safe than sorry and use a retinol or milder product.

@@MyLoVeLyMaN since I have very oily skin, my skin doesn't get easily sensitized by the Tretinoin. Bakuchiol is an alternative for the eye area, but I'm not really into it.

Thanks Dr Sam. If doing a series I’d love some information on tackling under eye wrinkles. I’ve very few crows feet at side of eyes. But under my eyes have a lot of lines, I presume from years of allergies. I don’t think filler would work and I know Botox is not recommended on this area. Are there any other aesthetic treatments that would work well? Thanks

Hi Carol, lasers will "work" in the short term. But the wounding response initiated by lasers doesn't last and really we wouldn't want it to. It doesn't foster the natural structure of the skin. The best approaches all take time.

Hey Dr Sam, i watched content of a couple of good opthalmologist , who discussed that even though retinol and retinoids are prescribed by Dermatologist, it can have detrimental effects on the eyes and eye health . Retinol increases cell turnover, so it leads to death or loss of eye meibomian glands and goblet of conjuctiva. It leads to dry eyes and dry eyes harm eye health negatively. Can you please enlighten me on this, also can you share some scientific backed articles/studies done on undereye & eye health and vitamin A use.

As a fair, freckled, sensitive skin woman with two red headed daughters, my personal experience is that SPF and moisture are the most important. I like the vanicream brand mineral SPF because chemical SPF burns. No tint, but I'm fair enough that it basically blends in. Lol I pay it gently around the eye with my ring finger. No rubbing. They also have nice moisturizers. No treatments in them... Just moisture. Without fragrance and most irritants they are the best option. Only straight vaseline is less irritating. My eczema prone daughter likes the Cetaphil ointment that is like Vaseline because she can pat it on her eye area without it stinging. I find I have to remove makeup from the eye area using oil. The only makeup remover that sometimes works is the elf brand makeup removing balm, but when my rosacea flares the coconut oil is soothing despite the fact that it can cause acne in some people. I use the vanicream gentle facial cleanser to remove the oil. Treatments usually sting, but especially vitamin c and retinol and "natural" retinol alternatives. The only treatment that seems to be comfortable... And then only if I am not in a sensitive flare... Is la Roche posse moisturizer with niacinamide in it. It is the one in the slender blue bottle that is only affordable when all the other products are cheap vanicream. Lol I use it two or three times a week. More than that stings. And I wear sunglasses regularly. Hope that helps. I feel your pain.

@@CJ_536 ok thank you so much for that piece of advice yes redhead struggles are so real lol 😂🥰 i also noticed it helps me if i wait about 30 minutes after i wash my face and tone etc. to wait before i apply my eye cream too and sometimes my retinol or lactic acid etc. cus i get that "sting"/ "burn" if i put it on too soon especially if used any form of microdermabrasion i also notice it if i get sunburned on my cheeks too it hurts when that happens i try to just do a cream i'll to try the vanicream i also think maybe i could have accidentally got my retinol under my eye by the accidental "swipe " lol
