"Rain rot" "muzzle poisoning" and "grease leg" are all actually caused by the same thing - dermatophil fungus (not a bacteria). It happens when fungal spores are released during wet conditions and they invade areas of the skin that have had previous trauma. The scabs do still contain spores so they should be removed from the environment to prevent re-exposure :)

Very good treatment options. Check your horses temperature and if you feel it's getting worse. Call the Vet. Rain rot is also Zoonotic. So make sure to Wash hands really well after or Wear some gloves.

Always rinse the sweat off your horse to prevent it. I’ve found that chlorhexidine is the best thing you can use. You can buy it at Walgreens or CVS.

Hey mate, I don’t know if you’re still reading comments 3 years later but I’d love some advice on this topic. So I’ve got a rescue horse that’s extremely susceptible to rain scald, never seen any horse struggle so much with it. He’s in pretty poor condition and the rain scald is very severe, his whole back from neck to rump is covered large puss filled scabs. I have had a vet come out and prescribe some antibacterial rub but applying it irritates his sore back. Could you give me some advice on how to treat severe rain scald in a gentle un-intruding way? He’s also prone to biting when he’s in pain so he’s been a hard nut to crack for me so far.

Thank you for your question. When the horse is in such bad condition it defiantly makes life a lot harder to treat. First thing I would do in this case is dilute gold Listerine to a solution of 50/50 water and Gold Listerine. Get him used to being sprayed. At first you will not rub it in just spray it on him and let it soak into the skin. It will help loosen the scabs and kill any bacteria that is on his skin. I would do this 2 to three times a day. Till you see some improvement. You can also ask your vet to place him on a low dose of Dexamethasone and some type of pain reliever. This technique has been very successful with horses in hot wet climates. Once it starts to clear up get him used to being brushed again and you can wash him every three to four days with a cheap shampoo just add a little bacterban or iodine in the water. Like half a coffee cup to a bucket of soapy water. It can be time consuming but will pay off if you stick with it. You can spray him as a preventative with the listerine solution well after he has healed. Have a great day and good luck.

@@RKStables I too have a rain rot issue with a new horse. As far as the question about a " gentler" treatment, won't the alcohol in the listerine sting the raw skin really bad? I imagine it kills the bacteria because of the alcohol content. Someone else I saw on YT suggested peroxide/iodine/ mineral oil, maybe that wouldn't sting as much? Does it work?
@lizxu322 Жыл бұрын
@@NathanPhillips2001 also remember it's not bacteria but a fungus. The bacteria might form a secondary infection, but you need something that is both a fungicide and antibiotic. For my horse I tried a sulphur cream and also just plain white vinegar. Also give him a rug to protect him from rain and moisture. I hope that your horse is doing ok right now

Hey Rich, is it possible for horses ridden everyday to get rain rot from their own sweat. I wonder because I see something similar sometimes, on horses that are used as pack animals or trail riding at guest ranches. I know that would be a symptom of improper care but still, just wondering. Hey, do a video of bridling a horse and choosing the rein length.
@RKStables4 жыл бұрын
The lack of grooming can increase the chances of these symptoms. I believe in the case of pack animals excessive sweat and rubbing is more on the lines of chafing and scabbing. If left untreated this could turn into something more serious. We do appreciate your question and suggestions and will add them to our future video list. Thanks again and have a blest day.

Wait so how do wild horses deal w the weather?
@debragray52932 жыл бұрын
How do you deal with it when it's the end of the rain rot, except small lumps are stuck on the end of Buddy's growing winter coat, curry comb won't remove, thinking about clipping the very ends, what do you think? We have had really, really consistent rain here on the mid nth coast of NSW Australia 🇦🇺, it has rained nearly every day in the last 12mnths, so bad. Whether or not to rug becomes an issue as He lives 35min from me, and I can't go every day.
@RKStables2 жыл бұрын
Hello Debra, This may be time consuming. But, you could wash him and the use a good higher quality conditioner. Do not wash out the conditioner keeping him damp to help the straggling scabs soak up the moisture. Use a finer tooth comb to remove the scabs. I’m not sure how your current climate is. But as it does start to dry up I would shave him. This would remove the remaining scabs and also allow you to medicate and air dry his skin. If buddy is scratching you may need to ask your vet about some Dexamethasone. I hope buddy gets better soon.

I just brought my mare home after rescuing her from poor conditions, owner told me it was rug rubbing and her summer coat coming, I believe it’s rain rot she’s got lots of bald spots and flaky skin on her too line, lower on her back and under her main, I’ve never dealt with rain rot before I’m not sure what the best course of action is, do I just buy some rain rot treatment and bath her or do you have any other methods or advice you could give me!
@RKStables2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ebony, Congrats on getting your new rescue. I know it has been a couple months. If you are still experiencing the same issues she may need some steroids to help get the skin and itch under control. I hope you tried the listerine treatment on her I know if you keep doing that it will help. You need to know bad nutrition can cause many of the issues that you talked about. So as you feed her if you can ad a cup or half a cup of flax to her food it will help with the coat and skin. I hope this information helps. Again I am sorry for the late response.

My girl just got what I think is rain rot but she has some bald spots. I found some products that claim to cure it so I've been using those, plus a shampoo but it's winter here now. Do you think the yellow Listerine could act as a preventative? Do you have any ideas on how to tell when a horse's teeth need floated? Any tips on how to train an older horse who may never have used a bit to use one?
@RKStables6 жыл бұрын
EveryDayBlue sorry to hear about you girl. Yes the yellow Listerine is a great preventative. Be sure to spray down all your tools like your curry Comb and brushes. Also the bald spots you can treat with MTG or Nustock to help promote hair growth. Make sure you subscribe and I will do a video on horse teeth and another on how to introduce a horse to a bit. Use MTG or Nustock, you can put that right on the area missing the hair. The listening can always be used as a preventative but if it is real cold then you may want to wait or only spray the areas that are bare.

Can people get this rot from horses?
@karolinagrunwald15904 жыл бұрын
Hi, I purchased a mare that has rainscald quite bad! What would you do for ones that have sores and pus and scabs from it? Please help :)
@RKStables4 жыл бұрын
Hello Karolina, first thing we have to do is kill the bacteria. You can go to tractor supply or rural king and buy a soap that is anti bacterial. Or just buy a cheap shampoo from walgreens or cvs and put iodine in it. 10 ml of iodine to a bottle of cheep shampoo works well for this. Wash the horse real good and try using a curry comb to lift up the infected areas make sure the cury comb is clean when doing this. Your horse may be very sensitive to this as it can be painful. So take your time and only use enough pressure to try to displace the the scabs and free the puss from under the scabs. If they are hard to move then keep the horse wet a little longer so the scabs soften up. Once this step is done rinse off all the soap and let the area dry. Once everything is dry spray the horse down with a 50/50 solution of gold listerine and water, leave that on the horse to dry. Re apply the listerine solution every day and try to keep the horse clean during the healing process. Once the open soars are dry you can apply mtg or nustock on the infected areas to help the hair to grow back and to continue the healing process. You can also substitute the listerine with BANIXX also available at the stores mentioned above or your local feed store. Wishing you and your horse the best.

@@RKStables hi thank you for responding!! Its quite awful the previous owners have treated her for weeks but its still bad when she arrived to me! I am in Australia, so just checking whats mtg or nustock? I was told by previous owners that its usually her legs that suffer bad so unsure what to do with the legs? When it rains. As its meant to rain for the next 2 weeks and Im new to this....😞
@RKStables4 жыл бұрын
If it is that severe you may want to talk to your local vet for an antibiotic. Get her a water resistant blanket something thin so she does not over heat. For her legs you may consider adding a antibacterial solution to a Vaseline and rub that on her legs it should help protect her legs. If at all possible you may need to search out a boarding facility so she can be stall boarded so she spends less time outside in the rain. Go to Amazon and search MTG and Nustok these are sulfur based over the counter medications that work really well. If you can not board her it is essential to get her a rain sheet or raincoat.
