I'm in Canada and am currently dealing with a reptile pet shop that received a snake with mites and realized it too late. I have a lot of snakes myself so I know how to deal with mites but I couldn't seem to find a safe ish product that i could use on the snakes that ships to Canada. Thank you so much for this video as this will make both my life and their life so much simpler! No more bathing the snakes and spraying stuff all over the place just to try to slow down the infestation and try to prevent more snakes from getting infested!

Just a little tip for anyone making their own. Rather than using permectrin II which you have to order online, you can buy "Gordon's permethrin 10" (which is the EXACT same thing) at your local tractor supply store. They all carry it in stock. It is $20 for a 32 ounce bottle which should pretty much last any hobby level keeper for a lifetime. Since it is the same thing (10% permethrin concentrate), all the same directions used in this video are followed.

I use food grade diatomaceous earth in the substrate like a thin layer under paper towels and it destroys the exoskeleton of the bugs as well there eggs. If the snake is covered from moving around the powder it's non toxic, and you can remove it with a damp washcloth or paper towel, keep the powder in the cage for a week and your snake would practically be mite free. I've been breeding Columbian boas, ball pythons, ground boas, for 8yrs and so far no mites after that. You could also hang those bug sticks from home Depot, on the outside of there cage to prevent any from coming near them outside, they don't like the smell.

We have Taurrus predator mites over here in the UK, it works well but is expensive and only has a short shelf life as the predator mites only survive by eating snake mites.

The soak won't kill mites on the upper side of the snake's head and on the side of the head, unless it's one that keeps its head under water. also, when bathing a snake check the water temperature with a bath thermometer.

Frontline has two active ingredients- one works the same way as Permethrin, by attacking the nervous system. The second is a hormone that affects growth. It is not really any better than this, just a different chemical used. Any pesticide should be used with caution, they are all toxins. ;)

Do you have any tips for how to go about getting your chemical solution in contact with the snakes head and face? I've definitely noticed when we're treating an incoming snake that it's always tough even if they aren't head shy, and as you said, the top of the head around the eyes and under the chin is the happening spot for mites. Thanks for a great FTF!

The best way is just spray it on a rag, and wipe onto the head, eye caps (which are not actually the eyeballs, but a scale over them), and under the chin.

You can give them a soak for a few hours in water with just a drop of liquid dish detergent is the water to break the hydrogen bonding for relief and to kill any mites actually on the snakes, but that will not stop more from coming. This technique is described starting at about the 5:00 mark in the video. ;)

If you give your snake a bath make sure to add in a small rock or such they can hold onto with their tail! make it small enough they won't be able to stand out of the water but large enough that they can wrap around and make them feel secure. Otherwise you are stressing your snake out. Also make sure the tempatures are suitable.

So i just noticed today that my reticulated python has mites. I've had her for close to 3 weeks now and she didnt show any signs of them until today. What may have caused that? I currently have her soaking and have cleaned her tub out to the best I can. I've also checked my other snakes and reptiles and none of them have them...how could she have gotten them?
@ReachOutReptiles5 жыл бұрын
That's just about the timeframe they would need to go from a few mites, easily unnoticed, to a full new generation hatching. They also can be brought in from other people's collection, substrate, live feeder rodents, or from attending a reptile show.

Every snake breeder probably gets this question a million times in his life.. How do you kill mites..Years ago I use to breed larger boids of various types , green trees, burmese pythons, carpets etc..before I moved on to hognose (which for most part are mite free) one problem that larger snakes have is mites..the gift that just keeps on giving.. if you ever came across these little vampires then you know just how much they suck.. no pun intended. Breeders will try anything to get rid of them and common solutions include pest strips and other chemicals that can be dangerous to both you and your pet. The best method I have found which if used properly to clean everything is rubbing alcohol. Kills mites , eggs, on the snake, on the cage instantly. Cheap easy.. if you get a little in the eyes, in the mouth and all it will do is piss your snake off..its not fun for them but it gets into the orbits and under the chin where these guys can be hard to reach. As long as your not doing a small hatchling or animal in shed there should be no issues. Rubbing alcohol kills most insects almost instantly, we use it on ourselves, our children our medical equipment.. pretty safe stuff. Also.. hognose are very sensitive to pest strips and other chemical commonly used to control insects. I hear horror stories all the time. It good that they dont get mites easy.. but if you ever do.. please try this method 1st.
