Porpoising is usually caused by trimming up too much, NOT leaving it trimmed down.

That was a very helpful video for me a first time boat owner. I have a 1990 Phantom 160 with an OMC Cobra 2.3l 1989 motor and 1990 outdrive... a little mix there at some point I guess. Hopefully that's good though. It has skeg protector and what looks to be a hydrofoil set above. When we got the boat, it had some problems which we were able to overcome. When they finally got it on plane it would die, etc... discovered the timing was 7 degrees out and dwell was off. Put new plugs in and reset dwell with the points and even replaced the electric fuel pump because the mechanical one was toast. It was a work in progress but the first time we took it out in the back waters of lake Superior, we ran aground at 26 mph. Scared the heck out of us. Luckily the skeg protector kept from any damage below on the outdrive, but the belly got scraped up some. We are still unable to get above 26 mph and when we do hit that speed we encounter the bounce you mentioned. I didn't know to trim the outdrive up once you are on plane. I will definitely trim up to 1/4 trim next time we go out! Thanks so much for your helpful video!

The same thing happened to us once when the Maelstrom opened in Epcot. The evac process was almost as cool as the ride, we got to see parts of the ride and Epcot few get to see.

Tim, great video/job. Just got an used Tri toon with no trim gauge so I was guessing on the trim positions. What about storing the motor, full trim up with lock in if sitting in the water (currently no lift setup), and same in the driveway or down to let all water drain out or any rain?
@Bward2163 жыл бұрын
For modern 4 strokes you don't want to store them trimmed up. This does not allow the oil to drain and when you start back up you will experience white smoke burning off that oil

My boat falls to one side when on plane. Is this from improper trim or engine height. I have moved weight around in the boat but boat always seems to lean left or right once planed. Any thoughts?
@BoatHouseH2o3 жыл бұрын
This may be due to improper weight displacement or one of the trim tabs being positioned differently than the other. I'd make sure you have all of your gear on the boat placed decently and then try and adjust your tabs in a safe manner next time you are out!
@ToolManTaylor3 жыл бұрын
thanks for the reply I have moved weight around. Boat has no trim tabs. I modified the transom and remounted the engine. Take a look at my changes here. Do you think that moving the engine in could effect the stability. Boat seems to fall to one side or other won't run level on plane. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHKyi6ymf8-Unsk

@@ToolManTaylor very nice boat and great use of space! Not sure where in the video you spoke of the boat tilting to one side when on plane however. Maybe it was in a different video?

In what situations would you want to trim up more than average? people riding on the bow? rough waters?
@BoatHouseH2o3 жыл бұрын
Yes, typically you would go higher depending on amount of passengers in the boat. If you trim too high, you may encounter “porpoise effect”. That is where the bow will slightly bounce up and down. Just trim back down about 1 second or until bouncing goes away. If too high, you will get higher RPMs as well and start loosing speed. It will be an obvious situation and easily fixable by trimming back down a little. Hope this helps! Tim
