How to Trunk Bend a Field-Grown Pine Bonsai

With the devastating loss of Telperion Farms, a prominent bonsai tree cultivator, to the Oregon wildfires, we dedicate this stream to reflect, recognize and appreciate the talented people, the special facilities, and the bonsai culture that Telperion Farms has given rise to. We were honored to be offered the chance to rescue a few of their remaining field-grown trees from the fires. Collaborate with us as we perform early fall work, such as a trunk bend and an initial styling, on a rescued field-grown white pine to honor and support all that Telperion Farms has done for the bonsai community.

Sorry to hear of the burn down. Nobody deserves that. Crisis management is 95% planning and learning from others lessons. Evacuation and demob. plans etc... Having everyone know their roles and even drills. If you have a valuable inventory, worth doing. If you invest in stuff you are prepared to lose, then no need for crisis management activities beyond fire drills, first aid training and lessons learned. Worth doing a workshop on "what is the worst that could happen" and defining the risk from Mirai's standpoint. Implementing engineering controls to mitigate the risk or engineer these events out completely saves industry ~billions of dollars per year in damages. Great that these videos are shared for non-members from time to time. Testament to Mirai's ethos of sharing key moments to the world. Maybe this is a core value of Mirai(?). Awesome!

I have watched this video a number of times and hear new things every time 🙌🏼 Now that was very helpful about the long candle / tips on a pine I have a nursery stock mugo pine that has this long candle that I now know to lay flat pine I just seam to struggle with on how to wire them properly especially from raw material and what branches to use and how many I can keep at one junction two or three.

Wonderful work and thanks for sharing this video! I have a Lacebark Pine of almost that trunk size and would like to do a trunk bend on it. I'm in the San Francisco Bay area. What are my windows of opportunity to do the operation? The tree did not have any work done on it in the past years and is well established in a 3 ft dia nursery container. It pushed very healthy growth this spring and I feel like it's in great health.

Does sap flow ever heal and return where the cut is made? If not would using wood glue help in keeping the cut together and sealed to keep any bugs or anything from getting in the fresh cut?
