I'm from the UK and I want nothing more than to have enough money to fly to Australia and have Olaf help me get a new violin 😍 Seems like getting your wand in Harry Potter!

Thank you! This is very helpful, I always feel like I annoyed the maker by trying out too many instruments, but this is reassuring.

Definitely not... the most important thing is that you find YOUR perfect instrument 😍
@thegood9 Жыл бұрын
The salespeople and makers are ALWAYS going to be annoyed by you taking their time, esp if you do not end up buying from them. You just have to put up with it. And the makers have GOT to realize that THEIR instrument is NOT going to work for many---probably a LOT--- of people.

I see Olaf like the Wand Maker in Harry Potter, I didn’t even realize he took his job that seriously that he would analyze his clients personalities to find a Violin for they’re own Energy. Thats dedication

I know my Cello is a beginner instrument...I played almost 10 years before I stopped. I wonder if perhaps at that point my instrument was the reason it just felt hard to play and keep up with my peers. At some point I imagine that a quality instrument becomes necessary. I suppose it doesn't matter.... Haven't played in 20 years. I think I'll pull out that beginner instrument and give it a go... After having a professional look at it of course.

I just want a beastly full viola sound. I like the idea of giving business to a living person, but also love the idea that im a simply steward of that instrument and that it passed through other hands better or worse than mine.

This sends me domn memory lane to when I chose and "married" my violin. I wish I had been prepared to know what to do, but on the other hand, my teacher took care of the quality and I took care of falling in love.

Not a violin but a guitar. I played 21 Epiphone guitars ( Beatles , Rolling Stones) in 1973 . I finally narrowed it down to two and settled one one which I bought. A freat ( now deceased ) lthier commented, yeas Terry, you picked the best one. I loved that guitar for 17 years but had to sell it for a new water heater in 1990 to give the fanily a new water heater when times were tough. Wife had two baby boys I was out of income after long service leave.

Tbh the strings affect the tone of the violin very much. It’s better off if all instruments are in dominant 135b which is a neutral set of strings and you can get the right violin. You can then purchase a different set of strings to adjust the tone.
@johnd75644 жыл бұрын
I was going to say the same thing. Just think how new strings make your current instrument feel, then consider that probably some of the instruments will have new strings you like and some will have older strings or ones less suited to you. I'm not enough of a heavy hitter that I can ask the shop to put new favorites on each instrument I try. :)
@eldricgrubbidge64654 жыл бұрын
I've seen that kind of thing once or twice. Sometimes a particular violin just seems to suit a particular type of string so there's tônicas on one and dominants in another one and that's fair enough. But if you're trying out one violin with basic strings on it and another one with new pirazzis or something you might not be hearing the tonal qualities of the violin so much as the strings. The same goes for trying out bows at the same time. Keep it separate if possible.

Ook! [When i was last selecting my bow, i instantly zoomed to two - turned out, unsurprisingly, they were the most expensive ones....]

3:39 - 4:32 -----> 1780s Viennese I would prefer this for folk music. 4:33 - 4:53 -----> 1850s French I would generally prefer this one more overall personally... Hmmm

Why does my violin sound scratchy? I have to play about a half our n it’ll begin to sound better. Is it me or does a violin need to get broken in each time you pick it up? It actually sounds better with a mute. More mellow. 😳

I love what you do and everything you show and tell us. But next time you make a video please don't have us looking directly at the spot light in the ceiling when you set up you camera. It's awfully distracting to have that spot light next to your head shining in our eyes and it also makes it almost impossible for us to watch from start to finish. But thank you for making the tutorial and giving this advice. I was looking for something just like this for when to chose a violin.

I bought one that was advertised on KZbin, mail order. If only it had come with a f___ user manual: DO NOT TAKE ALL OF THE STRINGS OFF . My soundpost popped months ago, and I've been hesitant to visit a luthier
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker4 жыл бұрын
How frustrating... It might be a good to see a luthier though... that way you can start playing it.
@bencze4654 жыл бұрын
if i know one thing about violins (i don't; started learning 2 weeks ago) is that whatever violin or VSO (violin shaped object) you get, you take it to a luthier to set it up properly as they can correct some things that may have been rushed in the factory... at least that's what Olaf said in some videos and he looks a bit more trustworthy than advertisements :) these instruments seem to be somewhat magical, very delicate things almost like with a soul so i kind of feel they deserve good care. wish i lived in Brisbane! :)
