How To Tune a Wurlitzer spinet piano Step by Step full version Tutorial by Pete Revelle.
The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, usually referred to as simply Wurlitzer, was an American company started in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1853 by German immigrant Rudolph Wurlitzer. The company originally imported stringed, woodwind and brass instruments from Germany for resale in the U.S. Wurlitzer enjoyed initial success largely due to defense contracts to provide musical instruments to the U.S. military.[1] In 1880 the company began manufacturing pianos. Eventually the company relocated to North Tonawanda, NY and quickly expanded to make band organs, orchestrions, nickelodeons and pipe or theatre organs popular in theatres during the days of silent movies.
Over time, Wurlitzer acquired a number of other companies which made a variety of loosely related products including kitchen appliances, carnival rides, player piano rolls, and radios. Wurlitzer also operated a chain of retail stores where the company's products were sold.
As technology evolved, Wurlitzer began producing electric pianos, electronic organs, and jukeboxes and eventually became known more for jukeboxes and vending machines, which are still made by Wurlitzer, than for actual musical instruments.
Wurlitzer's jukebox operations were sold and moved to Germany in 1973. The Wurlitzer piano and organ brands and U.S. manufacturing facilities were acquired by the Baldwin Piano & Organ Co. (commonly called the Baldwin Piano Company) in 1988 and most piano manufacturing was moved overseas. The Baldwin Co., including its Wurlitzer assets, was subsequently acquired by the Gibson Guitar Corporation in about 1996. Ten years later, Gibson acquired Deutsche Wurlitzer and the Wurlitzer Jukebox and Vending Electronics trademarks, briefly bringing Wurlitzer's best-known products back together under a single corporate banner in 2006. Baldwin ceased making Wurlitzer brand pianos in 2009. Vending machines are still manufactured in Germany using the Wurlitzer name under Gibson ownership. The company ceased manufacturing jukeboxes in 2013, but still sells replacement parts.
The Rembert Wurlitzer Co., Wurlitzer's rare and historic stringed instrument department was independently directed by Rudolph Wurlitzer's grandson, Rembert Wurlitzer (1904-63), from 1948 until his death in 1963. Rembert's shop on 42d Street in New York City was a leading international center for rare and historic string instruments

Literally just learned how to tune a piano from watching this. Just finished tuning my piano for the first time ever and it sure needed it. Of course, since I have been a musician all my life and have played guitar, autoharp, piano, harpsichord and violin (as far as the strings go) and studied vocal performance in college, it was bound to be easy for me to tune equal temperament. Already studying the John Young and Werckmeister 1 temperaments. I'll be tuning the piano my community chorus uses for rehearsal soon. I am also planning to offer to tune the pianos at the community college where I studied for 3 years to get practice and references and then I'll be making money doing it as a side gig. In another life, I worked on commercial aircraft so I will eventually branch out into piano repair. I don't have a ton of connections but the people I do know have a ton of connections.

Great video sir. I own this exact model piano, which my parents bought for me around 1980. I know the Wurlitzer spinet is low on the ranks of pianos, but I still wonder how my parents afforded it because were working poor. Glad they did - it was plenty good enough to teach me a love of the instruments, and it has given me 40 years of pleasure. Now I'll tune it up for my 12 year old and hope he finds the same joy.

Thanks Pete. I grew up around two grandmother's with piano skills, who taught me to play as a child. After decades of no lessons after my initial love of this instrument, I found a used spinet, but after getting it placed realized it was badly out of tune. Felt that it was doable since I have decent ear for music. You've given me enough confidence to take a stab at this after watching closely the method you used. Can't tell you what this means to me after all these years. Warmest regards, and very best of luck in all your work. Be well, Pete.

Good luck with the business! I also live in a rural area and the man that's been tuning my piano for 60 years had to retire, the state wouldn't renew his license which I don't disagree with. He lives across the state but comes to my area every other month. I worked for him for many years when he'd come and I've been waiting for him to retire to possibly get into the business. How much are you charging? Going rate in my area is $100-120 which is quite a bit lower than the national average.

@theamaturepro I am in eastern nebraska and around here the Average rate is $145 for a tuning when travel fees and pitch raise aren't needed, with travel fees its running $165 Average no pitch raise, if travel fees are needed its $165 fie a basic tuning and about $180ish for pitch raise, thsts the Average of everyone in omaha and Lincoln, from my own research of calling them. I am starting at $140 and then will.adjust accordingly

I work on guitars, amps, violins, bass, contrabass, amplifiers, and I am probably the only person in the valley who does pedal steel guitars, including full rebuilds, restorations, and copedent changes, and improvements to the changers. I am considering adding more piano work to my rep-woa-tar. I have several thousand dollars in electronics, and luthrie tools, why not drop another $6000. They action was so much easier than my teachers grand piano, the tuner added lead weights attached to inside on the the keys where you can turn the weights to make the action heavier or very heavy. I am taking the Randy Potter course. Watching your quick tuning is helping put things in perspective, i.e., how to spread the temperament by tuning the octaves. I am halfway thru your video and I would like to see how you stretch the octaves and check your 4ths and 5ths but don't think this is your aim. Thanks for this video.
@Jonnie_Rich
@Jonnie_Rich 8 жыл бұрын
I am also taking the Randy Potter course, ditto. I would also like to recommend you searching for " bill bremmer" on youtube and also google bill bremmer-- go to his website and find very helpful articles on tuning and octave types. Btw, I really like the piano tuner in this video he is fun and has a great outlook. The 4ths/5ths are useful and as you go higher up the treble M10, M17, and Double octaves help.
@Jonnie_Rich
@Jonnie_Rich 8 жыл бұрын
This isn't really a tuning-- this is a pitch raise. 0-26 mins he is raising the pitch using a chromatic tuner which is okay, however, notice he didn't do a pitch adjustments for the unisons in the middle section of the piano, nor did he do pitch adjustments in the treble. So, he should have included those unisons in his operation and then put the strip mute back in to start the real tuning. Also, if you notice 26 min - 30 min he uses a chromatic tuner to tune his temperament, which is not how you tune a piano, and he made very few checks to assess the beats. If you listen to his Major 3rd chromatic intervals ( starting at F3-A3, F#3-A#3, ...) they are all over the place-- some of them are slower than the previous interval-- which is not accurate. So, you would definitely hear some wonky chords and intervals with this tuning. I am not really trying to be an ass-- it's just hard to find quality videos on this subject.

Jonathan Price I have to agree, Jonathan. I have been tuning pianos for over 30 years, and this gentleman is breaking all of the rules that I have always followed. I employ a dual octave temperament method, which I have found to be the most reliable and stable way in which to tune any piano. I never use electronic tuners, unless there is unavoidable background noise, in which case, I use a strobe tuner, capable of recognizing pitches throughout the entire range of the instrument. I always back off the pitch, turning each pin, very slightly, counter clockwise, in the event that there is any rust or corrosion on the hitch pins, to almost completely eliminate the possibility of breaking any strings. I begin with a tuning fork for A440, and then move through the circle of 5ths, or the cycle of 4ths, until I have tempered all 5th intervals, throughout the middle two octaves. Next, I match all of the corresponding unisons, before moving on to tuning the perfect octaves. Tuning, by going through the cycle of 5ths, I avoid any frame stretching. Basically, the same principle that one utilizes when tightening lug nuts on a car tire. One significant mistake that I note is, the last motion in tuning all pins should be counter clockwise, as to prevent pins from "ratcheting", or slipping back to their original position. Granted, on a Wurlitzer spinet, there may be incidents where the tuner has no choice but to gently nudge the pin up to the desired pitch, when it won't set with proper technique. There's simply too much to critique about the techniques used by this tuner, so I may just make my own video!😉

I believe your take is accurate when it comes to a studio Kawai or nearly anything beyond a spinet, but this video is great and plenty accurate for spinet Wurlitzer owners, at the very least. Pete makes some joking remarks about these little pianos at the beginning, and perhaps he could have expanded by saying he would not touch a concert grand the same way as shown in the video, but Pete shows how a majority of tuners approach an instrument of this class. Sure, you could apply the same standards and techniques here as you would (and should) use with a higher-end instrument, but in my opinion (and Pete's, as I believe can be inferred), there's negligible gain.

I’m still trying to understand the A440. The A3 he started with was at 440. Mine says 220. In another video I watched, A4 was at 440 and he said each octave you move up, the number doubles, and down, the number decreases by half. Should I be finding a tuner that just has that 440 marking? I hope this makes sense.

Let´s be honest: The piano was not nicely tuned but perhaps it is ok for people that lacks of a trained ear. I have been tuning pianos for 25+ years and to date, even an easy to tune instrument takes not less than 2 hour to be done to outcome a pristine tuning work.

His intentions were not tune it in one sitting. He tuned the keys a little sharp actually, so later, he can correctly tune the other strings.

@@Jesus_paid_it_all well, at the end of the video suppossedly the piano reached a final tuning state, that is what I´m talking about.

Simply outstanding! This is the first time I've seen a piano tuned up. That meter it great! I've got a problem with my piano. I had a mama mouse invade my Piano. She had the gall to use two or three hammer cushions material for her baby mice. She had her litter on my keyboard. I hadn't played the Piano for a while and it was shocking when I lifted up the lid and found a ball of material laying on the keys and the keys were stained with birthing stains. How hard is it to change the cushion part of the hammer? I know it seems like a stupid question but it is a legitimate question none the less. Thank you.

Wow, I have that exact Wurlitzer! Thanks a million Pete! I appreciate seeing your craftsmanship and skill at work. I never realized how much of a trade there is for sound quality for the compact size. Would I be better buying a nice digital piano like a Roland FP90?

nice video, I watched the how to tune a grand piano video... I am tuning an old cheap/free piano we got (Whitney upright.) I am also using tunelab and I am thinking it will help with the proper tuning with the temperament... I am a total novice at it but I aint skeerd! I dont have anything to loose. I am wondering however, how many cents would a piano be off before you would need to pull pitch on it? I am thinking I will need to do this as well but even if I just tune it then go back a few weeks/months later and do it, it will be fine because it rarely gets played.

it's not a bad idea to depress the damper pedal before muting the strings. old damper felt can easily be destroyed by the movement of the strings being squeezed together, otherwise great job, piano is vastly improved

MrTommy4000 Absolutely right. He is ruining the dampers!! Also he may have nicked some of the strings carelessly poking them with the screwdriver

@@luiscruzmusictheory5806 And alot of ´´downward stress´´ on the pins. I thought piano tuning professionals always claim *not* to do that in any way if they respond to amateur DIY tuning videos online. Other than that a great video tho,but when it comes to details its a little wild to see. Smacking the keys when screwdrivers laying on top of it etc 🤦‍♂

Thank you. I have Bell console (spinet?) piano that has not been tuned in maybe 20 years. I am looking to buy a tuning kit. The issue, is I don't know what pin socket type and size I need. It has square pins. I figure when I'm snowed in for a couple of days I'll tune it. I just want to have the tools on hand. Great video!
