Thank you Baha! Finally someone who instructs this properly and doesn’t rush the video.

I just did repairs to my wife's oud. Cracks developed in the body so I used some wood glue with a layer of paper tape and filled in and covered the cracks. I bought new ebony pegs, sanded them down by hand and drilled holes in them for the strings. So far, so good. After sanding I treated the ebony with some tea tree oil. No signs of major slippage so the oil seems to have replenished the ebony. I'll keep the baby powder trick in mind should problems develop. I just strung it up, thanks to your video, so I hope she'll be surprised when she comes home to find her oud working like before...just prettier with those pegs. She is a songwriter/singer from Istanbul and while stuck in New York during this pandemic I hated she couldn't play. Now she'll be happy (and missing her friends and family even more perhaps)!

Well done! I believe that you did great job ;) I'm happy to hear that she will be happy with her oud and start playing again. All the best,

Thank you so much for posting this video which has been very helpful! I just received my first Turkish oud and was really struggling with slipping/sliding pegs. Again, many thanks!!!

You're welcome! Glad to hear it's helpful. If they still are sliding you can wipe very little baby powder on the pegs (you can use a cotton pad to apply).

Hello Baha. First I want to thank you for these tutorials and demonstrations. These are really invaluable and I truly appreciate your professionality and willingness to do this. I just got a Turkish oud and I am having a problem timing it. According to some Turkish oud instructors, the top first two pegs are the ones that the first pair of the strings are tied to (Re/D). But that's not the case on this oud I just got. It is a cheap oud, I must admit, but I think the strings should've been attached to the right pegs. Of course, I can change that myself. Having said that, my question is are the first pair of the strings made to make a different sound than the second pair above it? Or does it make a different sound because of tunning? They look exactly the same to me. Because I am thinking that if each pair is made especially to make a particular sound then it seems like the maker of my oud was a bit careless when he strang the oud. Any comments or suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Grek, thanks for your kind thoughts. I'm glad to be helpful. Yes, earch pair has different gauges, depending on the tuning we use. The first string (D) is thinner than the second one (A). that thickness gives us to tune them correctly. Meanwhile, how to tie or which peg use for the strings is on your hands but the order I give you in the video is the logical and useful one. But as I said it's up to you, you can tie differently too ;) All the best,

Hello there and thank you for the video! Some people tell that for the string instruments and also the oud you have to tune by ear like violinists(to sound good in Pythagorean intonation). What's your opinion about that specifically for the oud?
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Christos, you're welcome! After training your ear to hear intervals yes tune by ear would be better in live performance. If you play recording it should be tuned by tuner.

@ Does it matter ,with what instruments you play along live?Let's say with a piano that is using equal temperament .And does it makes a difference to the intervals on the fretboard? Thanks again :)

Same way just apply one whole step lower to all strings.
