Thanks for showing how to tune with the pegs. Learned the violin in high school and was told to never touch the pegs, only the fine tuner. After 30 years I picked one up again and broke my string at first tuning. Have been scared to try again since that time and it has been 3 yrs. My six yr old now wants me to teach her so here I am on your channel. Thanks again.

Great reminder! The ADGE string order is useful to know and often overlooked. Personnally I like to tune pizzicato when I can. Tuning seems less wobbly.

Pizz tuning is much less "wobbly" haha. Unless you have a really controlled bow arm, it can be tricky to do playing so love this!

I’ve noticed with a lot of my students it’s kinda like riding a bike. Once you figure it out again, I think it will start coming back!

You explained that good. I got an D’Addario micro tuner, my E string is reading G. I can’t tell if it’s because I don’t know how to bow. Totally new at this. Your video is helping me understand a little better. Thanks

I use Tuneo app for tuning, not feel confident to be sure its perfectly in tune when doing it in professional way. Cause these waves are hearable when they are out of tune a lot, but the closer in tune it gets I have doubts if the wave is still there or not, might be like 3% of error margin using hearing only while the tuning app will never lie to me when it comes to subtlety and I tune it perfectly.

Totally! Nothing is wrong with using a tuner! You could always use tuning as a great opportunity to try and listen to the waves and then double check with a tuner.

In order to tune the violin that has only 1 fine tuner you have to pull or push the string manually on the keyboard or in the peg box

Thank you! In general, how often should you tune? Is there a rule of thumb? I've read so many different things, some saying every time you take it out of the case even for a nicer violin. What do you think?

I tune my violin every single time. Even if I don’t think it’s out of tune, I always check. Every time you play your violin, you’re teaching your ear to identify pitches. And if your violin is out of tune, you’re teaching your ear out of tune pitches. So I always tune my violin every time. 👌

Professional Classical Violinist dont use fine tuner for G D and A. Of course E string is the one with fine tuner only. Thats because the strings they are using specifically Synthetic cores than steel cores. Synthetic core strings are the reason why tuning with pegs is an eas. Steel core strings needs to have 4 fine tuners for all strings since thay are more stiffer than synthetic core.

Tune it by ear as close as you can. Then double check with a tuner. It’ll teach your ear what is correct vs not

What I’m struggling with is figuring out which fingers to use ok all the other strings as well. I can do it while plucking but I’m still having trouble tuning the A and D (I’m a violist) in playing position

Sure, just continue plucking! It took me a very long time to get confident playing and tuning down.

The online violin tutor is the best but I do believe some of her resources cost. But totally worth it!

What do I do if I get different tunes from different devices? I have a phone and a tablet but when they both have the same app open, they are not registering the same note variation aka, one will say I'm in tune but the other will say it's a little flat. Should I just use my keyboard and do it by ear?

I’d double check they’re both on A 440. And if they are, it depends on how far off they are. If it’s less than 10c it’s not a huge issue. Or, if you’re confident in your ear, tune by ear and then see which tuner is closer.

Havent played violin in 8 years my high school teacher used to to tune my violin for me so now that I'm wanting to learn how to do it myself 😢i feel so out of my depth
