I'm here to find out about using bins to start seeds when it's cold out. (pre last frost date) Like milk jug gardening but using bins instead since I have bins but no milk jugs.

Cool. Well I hope this helps a little.

I just did something very similar but didn't think to moisten potting mix before planting. Thanks for the info

So, how did it work out overall for you, AVF? I'm attempting to start some Tomato & Cucumber seeds and was wondering if you had any more tips based on your experience.

How often do you open the box when the seedlings are growing?
@AppleValleyFarmGA18 күн бұрын
We don't have a strict schedule, but we try to let it breathe at least once a day.

I am old and new to seed planning I thank you both for the information but do you need grow lights or just leaving the tube lights on for 16 hours per day?
@AppleValleyFarmGAАй бұрын
We don't use grow lights with ours. Just good ol' sunlight.

Apple Valley Farm Great vid, Cheeky son lol. I watched this to see if I was doing mine correctly. I planted mine in seed raising pellets n placed them on different objects to support the pellets, Then two days after I had hard rain so I put a clear storage bin over them n placing a corner on a rock to let air to flow in I now have three sprots, Two r snow peas n one broccoli but the others haven't sproted yet, Should I put the lid under it and still let the air flow in or lid under then close it? Sorry for the long message.

I'm no gardening expert, but I would definitey let some airflow happen. But it's moreso for temp control than for air. Your seedlings have plenty of air to work with for quite some time, in that enclosure. But the temp is the real challenge. You may want to get a cheap thermometer and stick it inside. I'd Goolge to see what the optimum temp would be for your particular seeds. Hope that helps!

Have you ever noticed a very sharp unpleasant smell coming from the bins? It seems to have permeated the starter dirt as well. What do you make of this?
@AppleValleyFarmGA3 жыл бұрын
We haven't, but I would guess it could depend on the bin. I wonder if leaving it out to air out overnight before you use it might help?

Does this need to sit in a sunny area?
@AppleValleyFarmGA Жыл бұрын
We did with ours. But be careful...the sun can turn your box into an oven very quickly.
