If you're wanting to turn off a home alarm, and remove the power and fully decommission (forever!) a burglar alarm - then this is a short guide on how to do this. Key steps are:
- Locate your alarm panel
- Locate the fuse spur
- Remove fuse from fuse spur
- Open alarm panel
- Remove the x2 terminals on battery

Can confirm this is exactly how it went on our Mercury alarm. I think the battery was going bad and it made an internal alarm every hour (starting at 5am this morning!). Disconnected the fuse, removed the cover. The tamper went off. Entered the code on the key pad to stop the tamper alarm. Eventually plucked up the courage to disconnect the battery. The external siren then went off for about 10 minutes. Done. Thanks.

Alarm sounding because of a power fault means the back up battery in the control panel needs changing. That will solve the problem.

This is a great and useful video. For my decommission of the VISONIC alarm, I added the unplugging of the backup battery cable. I also turned off the security alarm switch in the main box.

Cheers this worked the company that had a contract to service our alarm said they’d have to attend (call out charge obviously), it took me literally 2 minutes following your instructions thank you very much. Obviously the alarm ringing for 20 minutes annoyed the neighbours but they are an ignorant bunch of self centred muppets so two birds with one stone.

Is it safe to leave the spur with no fuse in it long term, does it need to be isolated on the main board too or disconnected completely? Thanks

Are security alarms connected to mains power supply? I'll be decommisioning my security alarm tomorrow and will be removing all sensors and any wiring that comes with it. Thanks

You can get ones that are almost completely wireless now

Yes they are run off mains but it gets converted to about 12v DC (witch is safe) if you do not want the bell box ringing for 20 mins then log into the engineers menu with the engineers code

I need to move a sensor due to house renovations. It will take about 5 minutes to snip the wire, extend it and reconnect it. Will the antitamper trigger the alarm even if I disable that zone? And will it fall silent after 5 minutes or continue to scream until an engineer enters the maintenance code?

If you move a sensor it will go into alarm, but entering a user code can shut it up, but you might have to enter the engineer code to reset the panel.

Why does the alarm still go off if the battery and electrical fuse removed? How do you stop the alarm going on for 20 minutes as this might annoy my neighbors. Will it be safe to remove the alarm at this point?

Modern bell boxes have a battery inside, so if someone knocks it off the wall it still sounds. Old cheap rubbish probably won't have and if they did then the battery is probably fucked.

I have a Risco 2 system which is wireless with the only part hard wired the main panel and internet connected. So sick of having to replace the batteries at around £60 per battery every 2 years and subscription costs of 30 per year to Risco cloud that's before the annual service of around £100 per year i have decided to decommission and resell the whole system. in favour of a complete hard-wired monitored one. any thoughts and advice on how to best do this would be appreciated, can i do it myself or is it wiser to pay an engineer to remove the system?

The external sounder/bell box normally has a built in 6V or 7v battery so it can ring even if there is no power to it from the panel. The battery is charged by the panel.

I’m currently trying to deactivate my challenger pa28 alarm. I’ve taken the fuse out but too scared to disconnect the battery incase it doesn’t turn off. Will having it disconnected from the mains for a day or two flatten the battery?

No need to worry, upon pulling the battery off the panel will power down but any bell boxes will sound.

@@magicmillz Honestly depends on your bell box age. Sometimes if the battery is new on them it can last for god ages, but some engineers put bell cutoffs on which is what the video says about the 20mins thing.

Im just glad mine bloody went off! My electricity went off and my alarm would not shut up even though it wasnt set before it went off. I removed the battery and the outside alarm would not shut up! The system is turned off, it’s just the bell has a back up battery. The bell we’ll ring for 15 min till it’s dies down.

Old external sounders from anytime before around the early 90s don’t have built in cut off timers so they can ring for as long as the battery lasts, breaching noise pollution laws.

.... alternatively you can just pull the breaker down. I definitely wouldn't be coming to you for a burglar alarm decommissioning if you don't think that someone could do something about the bell when you're outside because that really isn't a big deal it's called getting a ladder
