In this video we look at how to turn for the first time, focusing on staying in the snowplough triangle shape, and twisting our legs and feet to help guide the skis where we want to go.

Thanks, nice video! I was surprised that you advised the beginner to turn by twisting their legs. I was expecting you to advise a weight shift --- by shifting your weight onto the right ski (of a snowplow), you turn to the left. Does this twisting action continue to apply with parallel turns or more advanced skiing (carving, bumps)? I have been trying to focus on _not_ twisting, and instead, looking down the fall line with my skis across the slope, pole planting while shifting my weight onto the uphill ski, then rolling my downhill ski onto its outside (downhill) edge, then tipping downhill and rolling the uphill ski onto its inside (downhill) edge, and then as I turn, counter-rotating to keep my pelvis and above facing more or less down the fall line as my outside ski becomes the downhill ski... there is femur rotation in the hip sockets, but I had thought that was from the counter-rotation, not from twisting the legs. But, I guess if you think about it, counter-rotation is just twisting from another point of view --- saying "my pelvis is counter-rotating" and "my legs are twisting in the hip sockets" are two sides of the same coin. In other words, maybe counter-rotation and leg-twisting are two different ways to describe the same thing. So I guess you are effectively getting the beginner snowplow skier to turn by getting them to do a slight counter-rotation, saving weight shift and ankle rolling for later? I had never thought of counter-rotation as the *cause* of a turn (I thought of counter-rotation as a reaction to a turn and preparation for the next turn), but sure, why not!

Hey. Thank you for the comment. Yes that is a way to think about turning, like you mentioned the femurs do twist in the hip sockets. When teaching (or with my own skiing too) having some knowledge of how much and how to achieve some twisting of the legs does help to understand how to twist the skis to help when it comes to parallel skiing and everything that it leads onto. Great insights. Thank you for the comment! 😊👍🏻

when i try to turn on a slope, i find that i'm sliding down the slope more than other skiers, which makes the turn wider than it needs to be. could you upload a video on how to avoid sliding down as much

Yes I will do. It’ll be a similar concept to this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnKqeWClo8uJb9k But yes I’ll upload one for people in a snow plough.

Yesterday I was first time skiing ever sadly I can’t get the turns right I always turn to mutch or get to fast. If I ski without sticks I’m better then with sticks. I always get confused and get them caught up. But it still made fun will try again.

Also the teacher I had tried to teach turning by shifting my weight on the left or right foot not by turning the foot
