This is one of the many reasons to own a 3046 b, or e model. Or a Detriot 60 series or a n14 Cummins. You can work on them with minimal effort and tools. Vs a new dd15 or Volvo motor or a isx or x15 Cummins. You need a lap top and you better be sure of what your doing on the new motors or your going to limp mode. These old school motors can be driven even when something is wrong. They will still get u home. Vs the new motors will get u a tow truck bill and a hefty dealer bill to make sure there is salt on the wound. Old school diesels for the win!

I worked on these engines at a cat dealership for years, there is more to adjust than just the full load and full torque screws, if you really want more power.Turning these screws will increase it a bit but you need to understand that this will change the engine set point and will alter the full throttle. Most time these are opened up because of low power and it’s always been in my experience because there was something else causing the power loss,timing advance , nozzles, fuel pump etc. Opening up the rack was usually a bandaid solution.

I think that came later on when the new e and c15 came in. A lot of those trucks were worn out and they thought just because theyre old that theyre just not as powerful as the newer ones so they had them turned up. But back in the 80s and early 90s things were very different than they are today. Fuel cost was nothing in compareson to today. It wasnt such a big deal for some places, mpg I mean. My dad drove for a small company back in the 80s and 90s that had dressed up owner op spec trucks. They did general freight, dry van, reefer, flat bed and he had 3 tanks and you did different stuff all the time. All the trucks were turned up and tuned. 2 of the most known and remembered was a pair of LTL9000 fords with 45 or 50 inch flat tops. One had a 3406 400 with a 13speed and the other was a 3406 425 with a 15speed to haul fuel. We live in new england, lots of hills an mountains. Having the meanest truck was just the thing.

Don't let some comments lead you astray. The screws need to be adjusted equal like you did. The static timing is adjustable. It takes some skills and the right tools (a timing pin etc) if the engine's in good shape, valves and bridges adjusted, variable timing on front of engine (behind the cone shaped cover) the fuel and torque screws and the aneriod/puff limiter working and set right (use a lighter tension spring if possible) some pumps had a balance spring for fine tuning ? YOU DID GOOD JUST DON'T OVER DO IT (I'D OF TRIED 1/2 TO 1 TURN) IT'LL RUN SWEET !! WATCH THAT PYROMETER/BOOST GAUGE !! AND NEVER / NEVER LUG A CRANKED UP ENGINE. GOOD VIDEO ! TAKE CARE.

Went 6 turns on both and ran it a while before taking the screws out. Use common sense and it will last forever. It will absolutely melt down if you don't pay attention. I had a blast with my 400b playing with other Big motors. I had a 6x4 behind it and would spank a 550 and embarrassed many 600hp trucks on SHORT intervals. When I sold it the new owner didn't want it cut back and drove it like an electronic engine and melted the turbo the second week. My rpms were set to 2600 and I kept it above 1800 at all times. You can't lug it. Let it breathe!
@sprdaxlw9l6 жыл бұрын
Look on Diesel Garage Forum for screw setting info. IMHO it is not so good to remove both screws. You really need the torque screw in there. That is what makes a Cat different is the torque rise feature. It senses load and adds fuel without ever mashing the throttle- sorta like the governor on a farm tractor. Without it, governor just mainly controls max. rpm. To me that is what makes a Cat nice to drive. I bought mine in 1996 and I am still running it. 7W7031 marine injectors. Or6051 turbo. (I need to update that-lag and smoke) 15.2 comp alum pistons. 11 degree motor bumped to 15. E model manifold and FASS lift pump. Mine still has both screws in it and actually only set about 10-15% over spec. It does not suffer from any lack of power. Easily will wax a stock or mild 550 E.
@redpilled35695 жыл бұрын
Yes it was the same with the 315 big cam cummins I had the pleasure of driving. 1600 or above (2100 max rpm) when on the highway. That was a good motor fully loaded it was a snail but I never had any major motor issues. I then drove a cummins m11 and that one liked it high too. The owners manual said otherwise but when I tried it once it pulled like shit.
