I'm an antique but have placed catheters in the IJ many hundreds of times (but probably fewer than 1000) without using US and with neither failures nor complications. Great care, thorough anatomic awareness and many precautions are necessary. However, if I were to do it all over again, I would certainly use US, if available. I would certainly also urge those new to the procedure to us it as well.

You had mindfulness of what you were doing. My last stay in the hospital, I put in my own cath and NG tube. The nurses were rushed and blindly did their routines.

Would love to see this as a standar procedure in order to provide beter outcomes for the patient. But often in practice doctors are in a rush or their selfishness dont allow them to take the USM

Thank you for sharing. Anyone who does not yet realize the utility and safety of US guidance for central venous access is not an informed practitioner. If available, US should ALWAYS be used for central line placement.
