This will just make this rust more but hidden behind the rubberized coating. Being from the rust belt, this is fairly common knowledge that you don't put rubberized undercoating over existing rust unless EVERY SINGLE BIT of rust is removed. Need to use a non hardening (usually oil or waxed based) coating
@El_Diablo_LI
@El_Diablo_LI Жыл бұрын
@Heffalompen That's the problem. It's almost impossible to remove ALL of the rust. Which means what ever you don't remove will be susceptible to worse rusting. This is why non hardening products like Surface Shield, works best for applications like this.

What was done to mitigate the rust inside the frame? If you see rust on the outside, there is likely an equivalent amount on the inside. I do think your treatment will slow the rusting process, but it will eventually rust from the inside out unless that is addressed. Did you use a borescope to check the interior of the frame?

I just did this to my '96 Dakota and '17 Wrangler, but I tore both down to the frames and had them sandblasted. I'm not taking any chances with missing spots. I would not spray that inside a shop... getting overspray from the pressure washer everywhere... just take it to a carwash with an undercarriage spray... the rest can be dealt with after a short drive to dry it off wire wheels, and wire brushes... and always use a rust reformer, or rust converter then paint.. never use rubberized undercoatings... they create a pocket for moisture to remain in contact with the frame, and causes more issues. use something annually like woolwax, or fluid film...the oily waxy type stays semi fluid.. so eventually it wears off, but provides protection from rust by not allowing oxidation to occur. air, and moisture cannot get to the metal underneath..

After all my research that rubberized coating will not protect your frame in time moisture will get under it and trap it in under the coat. What I have done is remove surface rust the clean and prep it with degreaser the apply Por-15 which binds to rust and makes it a paintable surface. And then apply fluid film to the inside of the frame to protect from the frame rusting from inside out.....

Let me give everyone some great advice that you don’t have to listen to but i can vouch for…. Get yourself a a wire wheel scrape off all the scale… then get yourself some corroseal rust converter,apply it to the rusty areas it will turn black, NEXT get yourself some Woolwax from amazon and the kelsport spray gun, spray the whole vehicle… the woolwax is oily and will seep into the pores of the metal and actually protect it from rust….. I tried the product used in the video on an old mustang gt of mine here in NJ and this crap made more rust grow… that rust oleum stuff gets one chip from road debris and you’ve opened a whole in the coating to allow moisture in and continue to rust your vehicle from the inside out…. Woolwax or fluid film creates a greasy wax layer that always keeps your frame and body soaked in the oil…. In the military we used cosmoline and oils to store weapons long term… not rubberized costings…. If rubberized coatings were better don’t you think the military would use it to store weapons not in use long term?? I will never use rubberized undercoatings again. I sprayed my f350 with multiple coats of Woolwax 3 years ago and has been through 3 winters in NJ and not a spot of rust anywhere and I know the rust isn’t hiding under a paint like the stuff used in this video

@@valdius85 The rubberized undercoating traps moisture and rust. No matter how well you try to remove rust, there will always be little nicks in the nooks and cranny's you can't get to. When you spray rubberized coating over those spots, they trap moisture and are never allowed to dry. It's like a greenhouse for rust. So it rusts faster than normal, and worse, you don't see it because it's hidden by the black shiny undercoating. So your frame might be almost rotten trough, without being able to see it. The only time rubberized undercoating could be used successfully is on a brand brand new car that just rolled from the factory with the guarantee there is no rust in there, but I think the best thing is just to stay away from this stuff. Use a paint that reacts with rust and converts it, like the european Hammerite from AzkoNobel. Or lanolin based coatings, like fluid film.

aren't the rubberized coatings generally regarded as the worst undercoating you can use ? they crack and peel, and allow water to collect _under_ the coating hiding and accelerating rust ?
@imnota
@imnota 2 жыл бұрын
A good quality undercoating won't crack and peel. Now the big issue with them is you gotta get rid of 100% of the rust before using them, even if you got rid of 99%, that 1% is gonna spread under the undercoating and that's gonna be bad. This is why IMO rubberized undercoating is a thing that should be used after a repair or restoration where you know you got 100% clean metal but for maintenance purposes or improving the longevity of a used car it's just not the right product and some kind of waxy coating is more appropriate. It's all about using the right product in the right application, rather than one product being bad and the other being good. On my e36 restoration what I do is get it all to fully clean bare metal, then use rust converter in the parts that were rusty prior to grinding in order to be sure there's no trace left (even tho it was ground back to clean metal, it gives me peace of mind and cannot hurt), I then use epoxy primer because IMO it's important to seal the metal from the undercoating itself (all factory applications are this way, don't listen to the bullshit said by people or on the can, car manufacturers know better, if you scuff the surface the bond will be good) and only then I use the undercoating. I would never apply it onto a surface that I'm not confident I removed all the rust, and would never apply it on bare metal either. Done properly it provides a chipping protection that no other product can provide.

Replaced parts of the frame that were rusting out with a frame repair kit from Pocono metals. Coated everything inside and out with wool Wax Black. Every fall I apply another coat of woolwax black. It's been 5 years now with no new rust. Did my wife's 04 trailblazer 10 years ago with Eastwood's internal frame coating (4 coats). Did the outside of the frame with Rust-Oleum rust reformer and three coats of rustoleum rusty metal primer over the top of that with three coats of rustoleum professional black paint. There's no way that got completely dry by blowing compressed air at it then letting it sit for a few hours. Vehicle needs to be driven for a few days during nice dry weather to get it dry. Painting it before it's dry will cause rust. That's why I do my own. And I use Fluid film.

A lot of work to coat the outside of the frame when significant rot is usually formed inside the frame. Was the inside frame coated with an oil based fluid?

A Harbor freight 20oz pneumatic spray gun. $20 (need a compressor) 4 foot long flexible tube with a a dispersing tip. $5 for tubing. (I made a tip from scrap plastic) Bar and chain oil. $10 gallon. (bar and chain oil works well because it has an agent in it that causes it to be stickier than regular oil. I actually spray the outer frame with it too) Step 1. Attach flexible tubing to spray gun, attach the dispersal tip to tubing. Step 2. Put tubing down any open hole in the frame, spray and twist as you extract it. Step 3. Profit. I found a plastic cap that fit onto the end of the tubing I melted tiny pin holes in the sides of the cap so it sprays out sideways. Then attached the cap to the hose by crimping with a low profile clamp. A normal hose clamp can bee too large for some holes. I think they actually sell tubes with dispersal caps too. It was cheap to fabricate though. But I also figured out later you can just cap the tube and melt some pin holes in the last couple of inches of tubing too. Very small holes to atomize whatever you decide to spray. (You need that cap on secure or it'll pop off in under high PSI) I only use that spray gun and tubing for that purpose. Have sprayed three vehicles and a trailer every three years for nine years so far. Still have more than half a gallon of bar and chain oil left. It smells and drips a little, not a strong smell but detectable for a few days. And if you want nearly zero drips in your driveway maybe use some thin coat spray instead. Maybe that's a product already, dunno. A disposable can of thin film spray with a 3' or 4' hose on it. Haven't seen it. Would there be a market for that? How many people actually think about the inside of the vehicle's frame. But you're absolutely right, water sits in there over extended periods. Especially in the Northeast the salt water will rot a frame from the inside out.

Took my 2018 JKU with 4000 mi on it to Ziebart for undercoating. First trip I checked underneath to find miss spots. Took it back to inform them and their response was to take it back in for a respray, nice. I checked underneath after the respray to find they sprayed the missed spots as well as the exhaust, back side of my rims and tires, and my brakes, which caused a pulsing in the brake pedal and somewhat diminished brake performance. After complaining, they refunded my money and removed over spray from rims and tires, not without argument, but I had to replace the rotors and pads. Should have done it your way, nice video content, well done.
