The UK not only has regional accents, but also has economic class accents. A British woman in my country returned to the UK and back after 5 years away and told me that she didn't realize the class separation was so great in the UK until she returned after 5 years. We really don't have such class separation, so it really would stand out comparing the two countries.

Yes indeed, and that distinction is more acute if someone from the lower socio strata ends up on the wrong side of the law. Uk is seemingly amiable on a brief visit, but if you find yourself adjusting to its elitest and hierarchal culture, it morphs a hostile existence unless you share a higher membership.. Truly horrendous, lovely country, but there are reasons why so many Brits leave seeking a more equal and less exclusive climate..

Had a few comments asking about 'The Black Country.' The Black Country is an area of England, in the middle. It covers a collection of towns and boroughs near to Birmingham. It is called the Black Country because of its industrial history, where the many factories and foundries would create a lot of smoke in the area.

I don't know Shetland so I don't know the local accent. But there's no dialect in the series. In a lot of these series, they just stick the occasional word in to make it sound "dialecty". I had the same experience with Montalbano, set in Sicily. "This I'd easy", I thought. When I went to get my hair cut in a small town in Sicily on holiday, I was trying to understand what the other customers were saying. Not a word! The BBC makes a lot of money from exports!

Liverpool is an extremely multicultural city. Many have Welsh ancestry, Chinese, Scandinavian, Scottish, Irish, Caribbean. On top of that our city centre has many international students and a diverse group of new immigrants - especially from Sudan, Somalia, Turkey, Afghanistan etc. My neighbours are Chinese, German, Welsh, Norwegian and Nigerian here in the city centre. Well, simple solution. Be a non-Brit, come to UK, start working and try to survive and learn the language AND the accent. I came to London, knowing basic english and understand 10% of the conversation. After 4 years I was fluent and thought I know English and I decided to move to Scotland. Glasgow. Again I understand 10% of the conversation, but I guess you will learn when you need to and that takes time. After 4 years in Glasgow, I understand all the Scottish accents, English and Irish

Back in the late seventies our engineering office hosted a meeting with english colleagues. I was very junior and my counterpart was in his sixties. At the very beginning after a few exchanges of formalities, I interrupted the emerging discussions. Our side couldn't understand the senior english engineer. His speech was just mumbling in our ears. I asked him to produce his best Oxford english he can. Somehow we managed to reach lunch hours and he crabbed his leather bag and handed over to me a bottle of finest Scotch whiskey. I thanked him by saying: "Now I hear you loud and clear" Fom that moment on we were out of ice!
