Could trading the simplicity of a single story for a messy and incoherent reality better equip us for life?
Story telling is dangerously seductive, from rewards in the afterlife - think suicide bombers - to fear-mongering conspiracy theories. But this stems from a universal weakness for narrative. Why do stories bewitch us? Could trading the simplicity of a single story for a messy and incoherent reality better equip us for life? Or are narratives survival tools, more vital now than ever?
Stanley Fish: Stanley Fish is a literary critic and legal scholar. He regularly contributes to the New York Times and is the author of Winning Arguments.
Renata Salecl: Renata Salecl is a philosopher, sociologist and legal theorist. She is the author of Perversion of Love and Hate, On Anxiety and her most recent book is called The Tyranny of Choice.
Sophie Fiennes: Sophie Fiennes is a film director and producer. Her films include The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema, featuring Slavoj Zizek, and the sequel, The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology. Her most recent Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami.

I didn't hear many analysis here that includes Jung or Cambell. Yval Harrari has a paradigm shifting sense of story; the stories of money, equality and politics. John haidt mentions that stories blind people and groups, a sentiment expressed here as well, but he also says stories bind people together: large scale co-operation is impossible without stories and I think that was missed here.
