I made myself a sweater 43 years ago. It was the first sweater I'd ever made for myself. The body was too big, but now it fits just right. The sleeves are were and are too long. Thank you soooo much for this tutorial! I just finished watching and am confident I can do this instead of my usual way of unpicking a CO edge....which is soooo time consuming and difficult. Over this whole year I've had to move my cardigan/jacket many times, andstop and start repeatedly and the 3 panels are all different lengths though I counted carefully....I was using up a couple of different yarns and the cardi was supposed to be like a coat so quite large...I already ripped out most of it and reknitted for another issue. Yes, Francine, the technique is the same but be very careful when you pick up stitches. At the beginning of a round, the stitches will form a "step". It is totally normal because knitting in the round is actually knitting "on a spiral". Good luck :-)

Hi Simone. You are right - this method works best when the project is made in stockinette or stockinette-based stitch pattern. The stitches will be slightly shifted if you do it on seed stitch, but it won't be too visible because seed stitch has a "messy" texture. Good luck with the "knitting surgery" :-)

The process of cutting and picking up stitches is the same as the process described in this tutorial. One word of caution though - try to pick up stitches in a wrong-side row of the lace pattern - a row that usually doesn't have yarn overs and decreases. As to lengthening the sleeves in the same lace pattern, it is very difficult to do invisibly. The place where you picked up stitches will show, unless you reverse-engineer the lace pattern to work it "upside down", and even then the transition won't be perfectly invisible. As a simple workaround, you can use a different stitch pattern to lengthen the sleeves. Choose a pattern that works nice with that lace, and it will look like it was meant to be there all along. The easiest solution will be to make the ribbed cuffs much longer. Good luck 🙂

It could be a bit tricky to do it on ribbing. The process of undoing the work and picking up stitches is the same regardless of the stitch pattern. If you plan to shorten the project and will bind off stitches right after you pick them up, it will look fine on most stitch patterns. But if you plan to lengthen the project, the stitches will be shifted by half-stitch on a ribbing. It will be visible unless you add a row of stockinette stitch. That row will not completely hide the imperfection, but it will make it less visible. Alternatively, you can add a few rows of garter stitch or a cable or some other stitch pattern to turn this imperfection into a decorative element. Good luck :-)

Hi Nancy. You are right - there will be a slight jog in the first row or round. It is not that visible in stockinette stitch, but it is quite noticeable in ribbing. If you plan to undo part of the fabric worked in ribbing or similar stitch pattern, either work a section in stockinette, garter stitch or similar stitch pattern, or undo the work between sections worked in different stitch patterns. Knitting "surgery" is always a creative task :-)

When I've unraveled and am ready to tie on a new color, when I'm holding the work in front of me, shouldn't the yarn tail be on the right side of the needle with the piece of knitting so I can start knitting onto the the empty needle in my right hand? Thanks for this! I just realized after 18cm of knitting 172 stitches in the little hearts stitch pattern, I have nine strange looking hearts in a row repeat in the first cm. Fixing from the top down seems really daunting given the crossed yarn overs. To do this technique, as an alternative, could I place a lifeline using the same size needle circular just above the mistake, then cut and unravel, then bind off? I’m worried about cutting the yarn and then trying to pick up the stitches in this particular stitch pattern. What do you think?

Hi Jane, Of course, you can bind off stitches after the "knitting surgery". It will probably be safer, because not all stitch patterns look the same when they are worked from the top down. If the pattern has heart motifs, most likely those hearts will show upside down when knitted from the bottom of the cut down. In this case, it is better to bind off stitches at the bottom and work an extra cm of fabric the usual way - from the bottom up. Good luck :-)

That's right. The pattern will be shifted. If your project is worked in stockinette or garter stitch, this shift won't show. But if a project is in ribbing or in some other stitch pattern with alternating knits and purls, the shift will be visible. To mask it, it helps to work in a different stitch pattern right when you start to work on the stitches picked up from the unraveled edge. This new stitch pattern could form a border or a decorative section. Happy knitting!

In theory, you can undo the initial cast on stitch by stitch, but it is usually easier to cut through a row as it is explained in this video. When we do it, we see the stitches better than when we try to unravel the cast on edge. Good luck with your "knitting surgery" :-)

The process is the same for projects worked back and forth and the ones worked in the round. To lengthen a seamless project (like your jumper), use circular needles and pick up stitches from both the front and the back, then attach the yarn and make a section that will make your jumper longer. Work in the round and use any stitch pattern you like.. Good luck :-)

Hi Susan. It is an interesting task to undo the neckline and make it smaller. If you want to add just a few rounds to the neckline, you can probably do it without any worries. If you'd like to make the neckline considerably smaller, you might need to add a few short rows at the back to shape the added section properly. Good luck :-)

Hi Dianne. a stitch pattern doesn't make a difference when you undo the edge and pick up the stitches, but be careful to work in pattern when you work the first row or round after that. If the stitches you picked up form a ridge on the right side of the work, then knit all stitches in the first row or round. If the picked up stitches form a "valley" between garter ridges, purl all stitches in the first row or round. Good luck :-)

Yes, this technique works for any stitch pattern if you plan to work the picked up stitches in ribbing, garter stitch or any other stitch pattern that is different from the main pattern. Does knitting from the elbow down when you originally knitted from the wrist up show in the knitting? Is there a slight ridge or other sign that you knit different ways?

When we knit from the stitches we get after we undo the cast on edge of a piece of knitted fabric, the stitches shift by half-stitch. This shift is not visible in stockinette or garter stitch, but it is quite visible in any stitch pattern based on ribbing.

I’m doing a cardigan and did less rows for the rib, could I do this to add extra rib please

Hi Manda. Because we work in the opposite direction after this "knitting surgery", there will be a little jog in the first row. This jog is usually quite visible in ribbing. To make the ribbing longer, undo the work between the ribbing and the main stitch pattern, then pick up stitches and work the whole section of ribbing, but this time, make it longer. Good luck :-)

Would this work for a ribbed collar band that I knitted in the wrong needle size? A slipped crochet stitch inside the band wont work for the sweater I knitted because I made it way too loose due to the wrong needle size.

Of course, you can use this technique to undo and then re-knit a collar band. Depending on the construction of the band, it might be better to unravel it from the bind-off edge and completely re-do it. If you want to undo only part of the fabric worked in ribbing, the place where you pick up stitches will be shifted by half-stitch. It is usually visible. Good luck :-)
