Dean Baker revisits the major policy implications of the series.
To Unf★ck America we need to lower the age for Medicare and expand Medicaid, add a public option to buy in, shrink the role of patents to bring competition back to the marketplace, and strengthen price controls on patented drugs. He also suggests policies at the state and local level like increasing minimum wage, providing unemployment insurance, creative work tax credits, and to increase corporate tax rates. He also urges more democratic decision making in private institutions. Finally, think like a Republican, but not in the way you think!
We need to fight strategically, and with full force, for an economy that works for everyone. Not just the rich.

☆ How to Unf★ck America ☆
This series is all about solutions.
Over the last four decades, the US economy has done quite well for the top 1%, but it has been stagnant for most Americans. This was not an accident, nor the natural workings of the market and certainly not an inevitability. US policies have been deliberately structured since 1980 to redistribute income upwards. In other words, the system has been rigged.
Dean Baker shows us how public policy can be deployed to #UnfckAmerica. Over six episodes, Baker illustrates how even minor changes in public policy can help change our trajectory dramatically. It just takes the political will to recognize that the current situation is not insurmountable, and that change is achievable.

Dean argues for change through compounded incrementalism where small progress sets an example which inspires more progress. A problem with this argument is that the world is already full of examples of progress along a lot of dimensions. Also, in a system where power controls the narrative, incremental progress may be reframed as failure.

His argument is just a way of keeping the status quo. To get watered down concessions, starting from his increments, would involve trade offs leaving us worse off than before. Notice how the big tax cut for the middle class expired but the ones for the highest brackets were permanent. Now apply that to this idiot's scenario. They'd let us lower the medical age in exchange for another tax break or cutting another program or cutting coverage. It is no compromise or progress if you lose every time.

Can't say I'm excited about state-sponsored journalism Mainstream media's alliance with political parties is a huge problem today State or corporate media is antithetical to the public good I understand there was a time a while ago where you could point to examples where it "apparently" worked pretty well Even if that was the case, and I'm skeptical, those times have passed Really appreciating the series though

Admiration of the conservative modus operandi should include not using "un*ucked". I don't recall Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Carter using that phrasing.

When economists use the word "progressive policies" when talking about patent research, I literally vomit. He does know that "progressive" is a framework for tax policy (rich pay more) and nothing else, right? It doesn't have anything to do with "patents" or "progress" or "general leftness/liberal ideas". Language has devolved so much I think he's just spouting sound sometimes.

Why are there so many bad ways of thinking on this channel. I do agree with him on copyright and patents though. If we could just get jstor be free and public that would be awesome, end the journal system for publicly funded research.

Socialist? Wow. He is a radical RW nutter if you ask me. He just wants the slaves to have a few more nice things. He surely dont want equality or even equity. He probably supports the Monarchy in the UK using the government as their personal piggy bank.

Left liberals are simply bizarre. At least the far right admit they are for slavery and they at least have arguments to support their view. Left liberals on the other hand are schizophrenic.
