Thank you so much for saying here explicitly that when the pitch of the note before the trill is the same as the pitch of the upper note of the trill, it's allowed to begin the trill with the lower note. More than a few times, I had a comment of people who heard that In the Baroque, a trill always starts with the upper note, and thought that this is a holly rule. Now I can refer them to this video 😊

This instructor’s opinion is not the be-all end-all. I once asked Peter Sykes in a lesson if this ^ were the case, and his answer was “no.” 🤷🏻♂️

1:30 - Jan Ekier would have disagreed. He argued that Bach prefered to play on Clavikord that gave a lot more control over dynamics than Harpsichord, and that Bach himself recommended a 'singing manner of playing'.

I think also considering ornaments that way fits more to french harpsichord composers (Couperin, Duphly, Marchand...) ideas.

Lisa Yui is awesome! I knew her at MSM long ago. You should hear her Carnaval!

At last--clarity about how to perform accidentals, with permission to make your own interpretations. I really appreciate these great teachers. I have always found ornaments to be very daunting and confusing. This helps.

Accidental are sharps and naturals not ornaments

There is no right way to play Bach but a lot of wrong ways. As my country finest Harpsichordist and Bach interpreter (before VHÓ) said; “its all about good taste” That is my guiding light😏

I'm like Ron Swanson. History began on March 31st, 1685 (Bach's birthdate). Everything else before that was a mistake.

I understand where this is coming from but incredible music, just less advanced, was written well before his time. Take the keyboard works of Gibbons and Sweelinck. Or, closer to Bach, the works of Pachelbel and Corelli.

@classicallpvault ah I apologize. I agree those composers, while not my favorite, are still great indeed. I just mean this as a lighthearted joke or meme.

I like this (and your other videos), but I'm surprised that you don't hire a good editor to review the Closed Captions. They don't seem to be KZbin's "auto-generated" captions, but they have a lot of similar nonsensical errors, apparently AI-generated. So ... as long as you're providing your own captions, why not get a good, musically and linguistically educated, human editor to proof-read them before you publish a video?

I thought Lisa’s presentation was weak and confusing. A much better Bach piece to use for examples and demonstrations would be the Aria from The Goldberg Variations. That one page score has more ornaments per mile than just about anything.

That’s a good point. It would be smart to use that as a guide.

She's aiming to discuss the Italian Concerto first and foremost, and only incidentally the ornaments, not the other way around. So I think in that context she did a fine job.
