This video will show you the best way to learn how to up shift a 10 speed Truck. Driving a manual truck is very important to have a CDL. Many Trucks today still have manual transmissions. I notice that your flipping the switch when still in gear. Will that cause any issues? Wouldn't that technically be going from 5th to 10th? Should it be switched in neutral?

In some trucks like the Volvo I drive, you don't even need to "Half Clutch It". The Volvo BARELY and I mean BARELY needs a half inch to one inch depression for the shifter to move out and in to gear. Any more than an inch and you might as well clutch brake it. All trucks are different for sure......."VOLVOS" A love-hate relationship hahaha..... THANKS FOR THE VIDS!!!👍

ABQ ENTREPRENEUR How is your Volvo during steep grade driving? My current CDL instructor talks down on them and says that they are not that reliable. But that is just his opinion. I was looking at the newer Volvo trucks for when I start working as an owner and operator but I keep getting mixed opinions.

You don't have to increase speed when you upshift. You can upshift to lower rpm to increase fuel consumption.. When upshifting, all the clutch you need is, take up freeplay which should be the one inch movement of a properly adjusted clutch. After freeplay, all you need is half an inch press to bring the vehicle to neutral, then the let the pedal out half inch then depress the clutch one inch to complete the shift.. That's far too much clutch use. Its not full clutch, its clutch-brake. Learn the four stages of the clutch. Also, you should not be stabbing at the clutch pedal. No need for so much aggression. I think your intent to teach is great but you need to learn proper techniques.

So you don't want to feather the throttle when releasing the clutch pedal, correct? You say not to gas and clutch at the same time but that shows when the pedal is in (clutch out) and throttle applied, basically causing high revs. Just looking for clarification, thanks.

I wonder if all truck's gear box are this smooth because I was in a international truck with a 7 spd just to see what it would feel like and boy I tell you it felt as if there were no bracket holding the shiftier. I didn't know if I were in 1st or 4th. It was all over the place

I will give you a hint. Before you start the engine, find out where the shift springs are. It will be sprung into Reverse and Low gear. Is it sprung into 2nd? 3rd? 6th? 7th? Once you find out it will be much simpler, and you will not get lost again. It's just that easy!

Excellent! I really appreciate this video, because I'm training in Connecticut at NETTTS. And they teach stick only, because they don't want us to have Restrictions on our license but the countries being so cheap. They're stopping stick altogether, so I don't see the point now.

it funny how most school say it's a 4 r 3 week course when their a lot more information to it before u can actually drive i'm in my 6month i finish my air leak check and my pre trip inspection. after i was told to take my drug test before i can do any parking. i know some pep who has been here for almost a yr. my school has old truck and it's hard to work with i wish i could had gone to ur school with better tools & trainers. aslo we get new pep who want me not the trainer to help them with their pre trip & air leak check but i'm out here trying do my parking& parallel one of the reason why i been in school for a while is not enough trainers who cares!

Double clutch with half clutch is hard to wrap your feet around but it eventually becomes second nature, especially down shifting (ugh) :)

Never mind "half clutch". If I push it at all, I will only push it one inch. Half the time I will not even separate the clutch plates, so that is "floating". When you achieve that, it is magic, and you can fly. Have fun!

Slowly release the clutch until you feel the gears catch and it starts pulling, then release your brakes. You shouldn't roll back doing that.

You do not go by speed to shift. You go by RPM. In lower gears you might shift at 1,400 RPM and in higher gears you might wind it up to 1,600 RPM before you shift. This is called progressive shifting for great fuel economy.

@@SternDrive I Was taught in school to shift between 10 and 12 on the lower range, 12-14 on 6th gear and 15-16 for 7th gear on up. Even 14 would be too high for 1st-5th. Just what was taught to me. Seems easier to shift this way also.

ABQ ENTREPRENEUR Your instructor taught you correctly. As Doug Stern was saying, this is called progressive shifting. Bottom line: low RPM in low range and as you go up the gears you slowly shift at higher and higher RPM until your final shift you might run it all the way up to 1,600 RPM. If you are climbing a hill you might even run it up to 1,800 RPM, but normally on level ground that might be too high.

This transmission is non synchronized. That means that the driver must control the sifting and not the truck

Simple. It is called rev matching. You must find the correct RPM in neutral with the clutch out, and then clutch it into the next gear. It is very fast and it needs to be muscle memory. Practice on a truck with the engine off. Veteran drivers do this by not using the clutch to shift. In other words the clutch is out while they wait for the RPM to drop. It is very fast, and you should use a light hand, so you will not damage the transmission. At this point you are not ready for "floating" so keep on practicing your double clutching until you have it mastered. And then....
